Gardening against all odds | Letter from the Editor

Do all gardeners secretly think they’ve got it the worst? For instance, because I garden in New England, I feel like the glacial till (aka unbelievably rocky soil) and massively unpredictable spring weather make my gardening more of a challenge than, say, that of gardeners living in Seattle. But is that true? Probably not.

5 Simple Steps for Creating a More Eco-Friendly Garden

For years I’ve heard the same refrain: You can’t have a good-looking garden that is also eco-friendly. It seems that many folks think native plants are too wild looking and that taking a lighter approach to garden cleanup or care will lead to a messy, unkempt landscape. I argue that there are small steps everyone can take to encourage greater biodiversity in their space, all while keeping it attractive.

Do You Really Need to Vacuum Your Mattress?

There’s an argument to be made for how often to wash your bed sheets and the internet has definitely taken that argument on. Some people only wash their bed sheets every few weeks or once a month, but bed sheets—along with pillow cases, duvet covers, and other bedding items—need to be cleaned more often.

Grow Heaths and Heathers for Year-Round Beauty

I often hear folks say that they hate heaths (Erica spp. and cvs., Zones 5–8) and heathers (Calluna vulgaris and cvs., Zones 5–8), their earlier blooming cousins. The most common complaints are the woody, leggy shape they develop (mostly after years of neglect) and how they outgrow the space they’ve been provided rather quickly. The same people who complain about heaths and heathers admit they have no knowledge of how to care for them (Learn all about caring for heaths and heathers here). But while these plants do need certain conditions and annual care, they are not divas.

Best Vegetables for Elderly Gardeners To Grow

Studies have shown that gardening is good for physical as well as mental health. This is as true for senior gardeners as for those who are younger. In addition to the health benefits, growing one’s own veggies can help spread out the typical fixed income enjoyed by most elders. Fruits and vegetables for older adults are also an important part of a balanced diet that can mitigate health issues and keep seniors feeling fit.

The Moose in the Tar Sands

This morning I have finished reading the Introduction of Naomi Klein’s This Changes Everything, a call to arms to everyone on the planet to prevent climate change becoming a human-extinction event. A week ago, the Guardian published an article suggesting that using the narrative of war for environmental purposes may not be a good idea. The author thought that it may be deepening the divisions between us, making it harder to get our message across. It didn’t suggest any alternative wordings, except:

Planting and growing truth

I am a digital native. I have been using the world wide web (WWW) almost since its inception, when outside of a university you needed a modem to access it, and to be frank it mostly wasn’t worth the effort. But as the WWW (which, from now on I will refer to as the internet, although the internet itself is older) developed it became easier to see it as a wonderful, worldwide repository of information. I still do.

Are there fairies at the bottom of your garden?

2017 is the 100th anniversary of the start of the Cottingley fairies story, a hoax which entrances the UK to this day. Cousins Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright faked photos of fairies at the bottom of the garden, intended to be a practical joke on their grown-ups. When Elsie’s mother showed the photos to the local Theosophical Society, she set in motion a chain of events that led Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to declare the photographs to be authentic. He wrote an article on fairy life for The Strand magazine in November 1920, and fairy fever gripped the nation. Conan Doyle later wrote a book on the subject, The Coming of the Fairies – The Cottingley Incident.
