Brooklyn Babka Ice Cream Pie Wins Trader Joe's Recipe Contest

You just got a delicious new dessert recipe to add to your regular lineup, courtesy of Trader Joe’s—and it combines two decadent favorites.
The grocer challenged the folks who work in its stores to come up with their own original recipe using no more than five ingredients. There were a few freebies—or items people could use that didn’t count in the allotment of fives—including butter, cooking oils, salt, black pepper, sugar, and water.
Emily, one of the judges for the contest, said on the Trader Joe’s podcast that they made their decision “entry by entry.”
“We had stores send a photo of their recipe so that we could see what it looked like at the finished product,” she explained. “And detailed instructions, including the list of ingredients, what you needed to do to get you from start to finish. It had to be something that we were excited to make and thought we could make over and over and incorporate into our sort of meal plan, if you will.”
Overall, 423 recipes were submitted (one from each store across the country), and the winner came from Woodland Hills, California: Brooklyn Babka Ice Cream Pie.
Sean and Jenny, two crew members of the winning store, told the podcast that they created the recipe idea about a year ago by chopping up babka and mixing it with vanilla ice cream.
“Just those two things by themselves were mind blowing,” Sean said. “The babka is bitter and chocolatey. Our ice cream is so rich and creamy; it just worked perfect.”
Mikey, another crew member from the Woodlands store, is the «resident pie maker» and brought up the idea to turn it into an ice cream pie. They brought Kevin, “the cookie guy,” onto their team, and the rest is history.
