Social media is an amazing phenomenon offering us a vast array of information. But users of social media should view the latest gardening trends with a bit of caution. Not everything we read is true, and some of it can be downright harmful. Social media is awash with tips and tricks to make gardening easier and more fruitful, but not everything may be as it seems. Read here for some garden trends to avoid.

This year was a whirlwind of earthy colors, TikTok micro-aesthetics, moody spaces, and bold and innovative design choices. And while summer is only just barely behind us, the design world already has its sights set on the New Year and the trends we can expect to see in 2024.

If autumn is one of your favorite times of the year, you probably feel a natural urge every September 1st to start decking the halls for fall. It's always a good idea to put extra thought into your new purchases so you can make wise decisions on your decor investments. So before you add the velvet plush pumpkins or salted caramel candles to your cart, take a minute to hear what these designers have to say. Here, they share half a dozen fall trends that they recommend skipping.

The dog days of summer are officially upon us, and as the temperatures begin to cool, many are eagerly swapping out their spring and summer home decor for fall-inspired items. Pumpkins, warm color palettes, and fall foliage are classic decor pieces, but if you’re looking to try something new this year there are lots of on-trend options.

When it comes to interior design, it can be tricky to know what decor trends to buy into and what to skip. While 2023 trends included leaning into bold color, maximalist style, dark countertops, and a nod to Art Deco, some others like all-white interiors, sparse spaces, and wiggly furnishings weren't as popular. They may not be entirely trends to skip, but at least ones to put on the back burner if you are currently designing or updating your space. Looking for some advice? We sat down with interior designers to get their take on design trends they wish they'd skipped.

The list of to-dos when it comes to selling your house might already seem daunting, but there’s one place where sellers should pay particular attention if they want to grab the attention of prospective buyers—and it starts with the yard. “When it comes to selling a home, first impressions matter,” says Realtor.com Executive News Editor Clare Trapasso. “The front yard is generally the first thing that prospective buyers see when visiting a home, so sellers should make sure that it oozes curb appeal.” That means a freshly cut lawn with trimmed hedges and weeded flower beds. Dead plants and spent blooms should be removed so all that’s left is a neat and welcoming home with a yard that doesn’t scream money pit.

In 2016 we saw the rise of many trends that we believe changed gardening for the better. A year characterised by an almost nostalgic longing for a rustic appearance, it pushed aside the colossal and over-the-top gardens in favour of more practical, cosy, and colour-rich spaces.

With TikTok continuing to rise in popularity, and short-form video becoming the end-all, be-all of information sharing, it seems like our attention spans are getting shorter and trends are coming and going faster than ever before. 

As temperatures rise in the last half of summer, social media mavens have been hitting TikTok for a peek at what’s trending in the great outdoors. Rated People, a brand that matches people needing handy help with tradespeople who can take care of business, tallied the page views for all things #gardentok and shared a list of what’s trending.

Katie Dubow is creative director of the Kennett Square, Pennsylvania-based company, a women-owned and run public-relations firm specializing in the home and garden industry, celebrating its 30th year in business. She’s author of the agency’s annual trends report, and we discussed the 2020 forecasts—most of them related to sustainability, both in what the report calls “cities of the future” with evolving “circular economies,” and in terms of a more regenerative approach to agriculture, horticulture and especially the crisis in soil management. A quick search for “picnic aesthetic” on Pinterest brings up photo after photo of a perfectly curated picnic setup: homemade heart-shaped cakes, bowls of colorful fruits, and bottles of San Pellegrino or pitchers of lemonade spread across airy, white linen blankets, usually accompanied by a bouquet of wildflowers. What you won’t find in these curated picnic pics are styrofoam cups, paper plates, and plastic utensils—and while a big part of that comes from the desire to create a pretty photo op, sustainability also plays a role.
