Once our June garden openings were over and a brief period of relaxation was out of the way, thoughts began to turn to changes or things I felt could be improved. As the season progressed, and the garden began to throw off any attempt at discipline, the urge to commence these attempts at improvement has grown – but I must be patient and wait until the plants involved are dormant.

Around here we’re not fans of the f-word. No, not that f-word. We’re talking about FALL. In our minds that cooler weather is still a long way off, so we’ve decided to celebrate the dog days of summer by talking about plants that really put on a show in August. When much of the garden is looking tired and bedraggled, these plants add a colorful punch to the scene. Some unexpected perennials and shrubs dominate our lists and for those who have been demanding it—Peter is back with his take on the end of summer. In true Peter fashion though, he’ll be discussing ice cream and…the solar system? Well, his segment will be entertaining, that’s for sure.

How you manage garden pests and diseases is a personal choice, and there are many management philosophies. Two of the most common methodologies are integrated pest management (IPM) and organic pest management. IPM was developed in the 1970s as a response to conventional gardening practices that relied heavily on pesticides. In contrast to those practices, IPM promoted sanitation, the use of disease- and pest-resistant plant varieties, and monitoring pest populations.

Some parts of the UK have seen their wettest ever July, although that wasn’t the case here, where much of the rain has been very light, but there have certainly been more wet than dry days. It has left the garden a little dishevelled and even I have had to duck in places to avoid overhanging growth, but order is gradually being restored. The cutting beds and clematis have been the stars of the garden this month, as you will see in the photographs for this end-of-month view, starting with the usual view from the back of the house (above), and roses are just beginning to bud up again for a second flush.

How do you chose the best flowers to grow for scent? Well if you want good scent in the home I recommend some flowers below that cut and last in a vase and provide nice scent.

I am miffed  that the Royal National Rose Society has gone into administration (May 2017). Originally formed in 1876 it owns land in St Albans but finds annual running costs onerous. As small compensation here are details about a couple of charitable red roses.

The dry weather has cause a lot of problems with moldew. (I should have said mildew but that is a Freudian slip I will leave in.) The worst affected in my garden is an early flowering clematis but this rose stem is not far behind.

In the UK it has been a fantastic year for flowers, no more so than an English favourite the Rose.

Hollyhock family are from the Alcea genus but I couldn’t find a UK supplier of the variety above..

My father grew exceptional roses before many of the varieties had been discovered or reached their current prominence. One thing he did to get special blooms was to restrict the number of flower buds by pinching out the runts.In many circumstances a good big one is more important the several also ran small ones.
