An increase in development and urban sprawl has created a need to develop more wildlife-friendly landscapes. All wildlife need food, shelter (cover), water, and space to survive. A rain garden is a landscaped depression designed to capture stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces such as roofs and roads and runoff from compacted turfgrass. It’s summertime! And while this means long, warm, and sunny days, it can also mean more sun exposure for our skin. However, this does not mean we should forgo our favorite summer activities altogether. By following some simple tips, we can protect ourselves and stay safe in the sun.

World Kabob Day is a culinary celebration that unites food enthusiasts around the globe. It’s a day dedicated to the rich, diverse flavors of kabobs, a dish that transcends cultures and brings a piece of culinary art to our plates. At first glance, the offerings from the Washington, DC-based soup company Soupergirl seem pretty straightforward. The company specializes in vegan and kosher soup and gazpacho, as well as soup toppers that customers can mix and match. There’s the classic tomato soup, a beet gazpacho available in a portable container and even vegan “cheesy” croutons. 

Danielle Walker remembers how hard she worked to feed her family, just a few years ago. In 2013 and 2014, her mother was undergoing cancer treatments, and her two sons were homebound, dealing with their own health issues. Walker had to find ways to keep everyone healthy and fed. 

A garden patio provides a versatile space for you to dine, relax, cook and eat food, and even grow plants. Before you start choosing your new patio, work out how much space you have and what you want from it – do you need space for a barbecue and dining or seating area? And how about installing some eco functionality to your garden while the patio is being dug, such as creating a land drain, soakaway or underground water storage tank, to reduce the amount of rainwater being sent into the sewerage system and even save water to use on your garden?

For some, reports of a deadly new virus spreading across the planet seemingly came out of nowhere last year. But the emergence of COVID-19 didn’t shock the epidemiologists and researchers who study zoonotic diseases, the kinds of diseases that jump from animals to humans.

This current strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI, more commonly known as bird flu) is causing problems. It’s been detected in nearly 97 million birds in commercial or backyard flocks, with another 9,500 wild birds confirmed infected. In birds, it can cause coughing and breathing trouble, swelling and, ultimately, death. 

Getting a good night’s sleep is key to maintaining your wellbeing. Sleep makes up a third of every person’s life, but some 50 to 70 million people in the U.S. struggle with easily falling asleep. So when videos of people drinking lettuce water to supposedly help induce sleep started making their way around social media, it’s no surprise that many people jumped on the trend. But is lettuce water actually a good DIY sleep aid?
