There’s a lot to consider when it comes to determining the right plan for your yard. It will be dependent on your location and climate, to be sure, but could also hinge on your budget, skill level, and how much time you have on your hands. That being said, those who live in drought-prone areas might think their landscaping decisions hinge less on what plants to use and more on whether or not to just hardscape and call it a day. But there are an array of drought-tolerant plants that can help create a lush landscape, even if rainfall and irrigation both come at a premium. One option is the dry garden.
What Is a Dry Garden?A dry garden is landscaping that takes a water-conserving approach. These plants will not require supplemental watering as they are adapted to survive in dry environments. Oftentimes the plants that are best suited for an area that sees regular drought-filled seasons, are native varieties—think wildflowers, sedum, and yucca. You can also select plants that, while not native, hail from a region with similar conditions. In the South, that might mean drought-tolerant varieties like salvia, lavender, and catmint.
Is a Dry Garden Right for You and Your Yard? It’s important to know that the entire garden doesn’t have to be “dry” for a xeriscape-friendly (landscape that requires little to no supplemental water outside of natural precipitation) approach. Just as you might have plants within your yard that take full sun, others that require shade, and some that straddle the two, so too can your yard provide pockets of low-maintenance, low-water landscaping.
When selecting any plants for your yard, it’s important to know your USDA Zone and what grows best in your area. Consider plants that are solidly within your

I have a dorky habit to confess. Whenever my to-go iced coffee is finished, I dump the ice from my reusable cup into the dirt of a street tree. It’s probably like half a cup of water, and I am sure it doesn’t make a difference, but I can’t not do it.
Brown marmorated stink bugs may have a funny name, but no one who has to deal with them is laughing. “They can be a significant issue for commercial growers and home gardeners in regions where the stink bug population is high,” says Jim Walgenbach, PhD, professor and extension entomologist atNorth Carolina State University. “All life stages of stink bugs can cause damage to foliage and fruit.”They feed on all kinds of plants, both edible and ornamental, but their favorites include peaches, apples, pears, pecans, tomatoes, peppers and sweet corn.
Hens and chicks plants make great low-maintenance options for dry, sunny gardens. And there are so many interesting cultivars available in a range of hues, from chocolate brown to green to bright orange and yellow. The common name may be confusing until you grow them yourself and realize it makes sense. One main rosette (mama hen) will eventually produce several offsets or babies (the chicks!). Though I’ve never heard them referred to by houseleeks, their other common name, the Latin name you’ll see on plant tags for these popular succulents is Sempervivum. They are members of the stonecrop family (Crassulaceae).
It’s nice to be aware of the many changes and trends taking place in the world of gardening.
One’s mailbox is one of the first contacts with the household, being in the front yard, in an accessible area for the postman, it often enters the perspective of the pedestrian walking along; in some cases, the mailbox itself is the only item that connects you with the outside world, reason for which, cool mailboxes are carrying an immense responsibility, they`re meant to connect buildings with the pedestrians, with the road, they`re meant to function as small landmarks for households, and more importantly, businesses; in some cases they facilitate mailbox correspondence too.
