It’s Sunday morning, and Ryan is still asleep, and I got a bit bored and started playing around with one of those “blog title generators”. (For those of you for whom this is a new concept, they generate click-bait style headlines for a topic you give them.)
My chosen topic, of course, was “space plants”. The results were fairly hilarious. One of the more sensible suggestions was an article about space plants in movies. And actually, there have been some great space plants in films.
Who could forget The Martian? On Earth, we tend to forget that we need plants to survive, but on Mars, a crop of potatoes saves astronaut Mark Watney from starving to death. In the future, will we see a fresh batch of astrobotanists who chose their career after seeing this movie as kids?

I’m not old enough to have seen Silent Running when it first came out (really, I’m not!), but it’s one of the films I remember seeing as a kid. It probably wasn’t age-appropriate. I remember a lovely greenhouse floating through space, with some awesome robot gardeners. I remember being sad that not all of the robot gardeners survive until the end of the movie. My young brain failed to remember that Bruce Dern’s character actually murders the rest of the crew to save the garden.
I need to watch this one again because I can only really remember it has Cillian Murphy in it. There’s some sort of sun-related apocalypse that involves blasting two spaceships off on a mission to save the Earth. It mostly doesn’t go well, but they have these kick-ass greenhouse modules which (iirc) are part of the life support system.
When I first saw this movie, I didn’t like it that much.
