Costumes, and candy, and sugar! Oh my! That’s what comes to my mind when I think about Halloween. Children enjoy dressing up as their favorite characters, going door to door in the neighborhood, and filling a bag or bucket with candy. But with all that candy comes a lot of sugar. Children in the US consume up to 17% of sugar in their diet daily. Sugar is often hidden in packaged foods and drinks and is highly processed. It is often labeled with different names like high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, honey detoxes raw sugar, and other names. Candy is a known culprit for its high sugar content. Too much sugar, especially in young children, can lead to issues with obesity, tooth decay, diabetes, and other health problems down the road.
Moss, lichen and algae can often be found growing on the branches of established trees, shrubs and hedges, especially in rural areas of the country with high rainfall. In particular, neglected, overgrown hedges where the branches have become overcrowded and/or those that are lacking in vigour as a result of old age or poor growing conditions can be prone to mossy growth. The good news is, however, while it may look unsightly, it’s not actually doing any damage.
Dryers are a convenient staple in most modern homes for a good reason. They make drying our clothes and household linens easy. However, not all items can withstand the heat and tumbling of a dryer. Delicate fabrics can be damaged, rubber can melt, and structured items like bras and swimwear can warp or shrink. Instead, air-dry these types of items on an indoor drying rack or an old-fashioned outdoor clothesline. Here are eight things you should never put in the dryer.
Want to refresh your space—but don’t have the budget (or the desire) for a shopping spree? A primpover might be overdue.

This article has the potential to be very short. That is because most garden plants provide some type of environmental benefit to their immediate surroundings—assuming they are chosen appropriately for the location, are not over-managed, and are not invasive. Plants cool the air in summer, reduce localized flooding risks, act as homes and corridors for wildlife, are barriers to pollution, and attenuate noise. But there may be some characteristics that help specific plants excel at providing benefits to us. And this may give some species or varieties an environmental edge, particularly on a small (individual plant and garden) scale. This is something I have been exploring in my research over the last 15 years for the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in the United Kingdom.
One of the most important things to know about making your own compost is what you can and cannot put in it. For example, meat and dairy shouldn’t go in because they get very stinky and attract pests. What about eggshells, though? When composting eggshells, salmonella might concern a conscientious gardener, but it’s really nothing to worry about.
It’s fair to say that landscape architects and garden designers like to talk an awful lot about the bone structure of a garden. Not that they literally mean high cheekbones, the perfectly tip-tilted nose, or a sculpted jawline. Instead, they’re referring to those qualities of a garden’s design that help it to look good no matter what the time of year. For example, beautiful, expertly constructed pathways. A well-groomed hedge. Handsome walls. A perfectly positioned, well-chosen specimen tree. Timeless paving. Plus an attention to scale and proportion, and an understanding of space that includes a nod to the notion of the golden mean or golden ratio, sometimes also known as the theory of divine proportion.
Opal fruits, Constantinople and Cat Stevens all famously changed their names to the now familiar Starburst, Istanbul and Yusuf but spent years still being referred to by their former moniker. Which was a little confusing to say the least. And we now find ourselves in the same situation in horticulture. Plants which we’ve known under a certain name for generations are suddenly being changed. The botanical language we as gardeners share is shifting. If you go into a nursery today in pursuit of a rosemary, what you actually need to ask for is a salvia! I’ve not lost my mind. This name change is among a plethora of changing titles for the plants we all know and love. What was formerly known as Rosemarinus officinalis (AKA rosemary) is now Salvia rosemarinifolia. I know!
There are many foods and ingredients that illicit strong opinions among eaters, often based on one unpleasant sensory experience due to poor preparation and not the food itself. Okra, a mucilaginous member of the Mallow family, is no stranger.

When Neil Patterson Jr. was about 7 or 8 years old, he saw a painting called “Gathering Chestnuts,” by Tonawanda Seneca artist Ernest Smith. Patterson didn’t realize that the painting showed a grove of American chestnuts, a tree that had been all but extinct since his great-grandparents’ time. Instead, what struck Patterson was the family in the foreground: As a man throws a wooden club to knock chestnuts from the branches above, a child shells the nuts and a woman gathers them in a basket. Even the dog seems engrossed in the process, watching with head cocked as the club sails through the air.
Welcome to the "Processing" section on diygarden.cc! Here you will discover valuable information about the various aspects of processing in gardening and essential techniques that can help you maximize the potential of your garden produce and resources.
In gardening, processing refers to the various activities and techniques involved in preparing and transforming plants, produce, or garden materials to achieve specific goals or desired outcomes. It encompasses several different aspects of garden management.
Here are some examples of processing in gardening:
Harvesting: Harvesting is a crucial aspect of gardening processing. It involves gathering mature fruits, vegetables, herbs, or flowers from the plants at the appropriate time. Harvesting ensures that the produce is at its peak freshness and flavor. Cleaning and Sorting: Once the harvest is complete, processing may involve cleaning and sorting the harvested produce. This typically includes removing dirt, debris, or any damaged or spoiled items. Sorting helps in organizing the produce based on size, quality, or specific requirements. Storing and Preserving: Processing also includes storing and preserving the harvested produce to extend its shelf life. This may involve techniques such as canning, freezing, drying, or fermenting. Storing produce in proper conditions helps maintain its freshness and nutritional value. Seed Saving: Gardeners who want to maintain specific plant varieties may engage in seed saving. This involves processing and collecting seeds from mature plants for future planting. It ensures the preservation of desired traits and cultivars. Composting: Composting is another form of processing in gardening. It involves the decomposition of organic matter, such as kitchen scraps, garden waste, and leaves, to create nutrient-rich compost. The compost can then be used to improve soil fertility and enhance plant growth. The "Processing" section on diygarden.cc is your go-to resource for valuable information and practical tips to enhance your gardening journey.
