Hi GPODers—it’s your editor, Joseph, here.
I had no preconceived ideas of what I might pick for today’s vase but wanted to avoid hellebores and snowdrops, which would have been the easy option. I don’t have many summer snowflakes, Leucojum aestivum, but the first stems were in bud so I cut three as a starting point, keeping the stems long.

There’s nothing like a spring container to celebrate the fact that we’ve turned the corner, leaving winter behind us. From bright yellow daffodils that yell ‘Spring!’ to more subtle narcissus that whisper the change of season, or from the lush green of ferns to a sweet-shop display of tulips, there’s a spring container for everyone. And the beauty of a container (a small one at any rate) is that it’s portable so you can move your pot of joy to wherever you’ll see it most – right on your front doorstep, or just outside the kitchen window so you can gaze at it while doing the dishes! Our choices include recommendations from the Gardeners’ World team and familiar faces from across the gardening industry.

Philodendron ‘Pink Princess’ is an eye-catching house plant with lush, dark green, waxy leaves boldly variegated with bubble-gum-pink. Philodendron is a popular and easy-to-grow plant for the home that gives all-year foliage interest with versatile growth that can either trail or climb, and ‘Pink Princess’ is a new and unusual variety. The glossy evergreen leaves are heart-shaped, giving rise to its other name of ‘sweetheart plant’. ‘Pink Princess’ philodendron slowly reaches a maximum height of 1.5m and spread of 1.2m if given a moss pole to climb up. Alternatively, pinch out the growth regularly to grow ‘Pink Princess’ as a bushy or trailing house plant. Note that philodendron is toxic to humans and animals and can cause skin irritation, so take care when handling.

Box, Buxus sempervirens, is a British native tree, most commonly used for hedging and topiary thanks to its small, evergreen leaves and dense growth. In April and May, it produces insignificant yellow flowers, that are nonetheless rich in nectar and popular with bees. Left untrimmed, a box plant can reach 5m tall, but most never reach this as they are clipped regularly.

Winter is a great time to look outside and evaluate the structure of your landscape. It can be easier during this time of year to tell if you need a few more woodies to add structural support. Small shrubs in particular have a lot of utility in gardens. They fit perfectly in beds and borders and can be used in tight spaces where more presence than a perennial is warranted. Here are a few smaller shrubs with impressive foliage that have worked well for us in the Southeast.
Now March has arrived, it’s tempting to rush into the garden with the seed packets, but the weather can still be freezing cold, so it’s not a good idea to sow crops outside just yet. Instead, focus on sowing seeds inside and taking care of overwintering plants, while the weather warms and the days lengthen.
Welcome to the "Greening" section of diygarden.cc! Here, we explore the transformative power of bringing nature into your urban spaces and creating vibrant green environments.
Greening refers to the process of introducing more green vegetation, such as plants, trees, and grass, into an area, typically in urban environments. It is an effort to increase the amount of natural greenery and vegetation in spaces that may be dominated by concrete, buildings, or other artificial structures. The purpose of greening initiatives is to improve the overall aesthetics, environmental quality, and livability of an area.
Green spaces offer numerous benefits, including: Improved
Air Quality: Plants and trees help to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis, thereby reducing air pollution and improving air quality. Urban Heat Island Mitigation: Greening can help combat the urban heat island effect, which causes cities to be significantly hotter than surrounding rural areas. Vegetation provides shade and cools the surrounding environment through evapotranspiration. Biodiversity Support: Green spaces provide habitats for various plants, insects, birds, and other wildlife, contributing to urban biodiversity and ecological balance. Stormwater Management: Vegetation helps absorb and slow down rainwater runoff, reducing the strain on drainage systems and preventing flooding and erosion. Noise Reduction: Plants have the ability to absorb and deflect sound waves, acting as natural noise barriers and reducing noise pollution. Improved Mental Well-being: Access to green spaces has been linked to improved mental health, reduced stress levels, and increased overall well-being. Green areas provide opportunities for relaxation, recreation, and connection with nature.Explore our "Greening" section of diygarden.cc for practical advice, inspiration, and resources to help you create a greener, more sustainable, and vibrant community.
