Landlords, listen up!
In our backyard I wanted to build a PVC fence that goes from post to post of a patio. Originally, I build the fence out of wood but it only lasted 3 years and then started to rot because of the rain. So I decided to rebuild it using PVC pipe. The PVC pipe should last a lot longer and the price is not much different from the wood fence.
A post on how I built inexpensive deck rails out of steel conduit. Have you seen the gorgeous steel wire railings that have been populating Pinterest the last couple of years and gaining huge popularity? Well I sure have and I’ve been drooling over them for months and months… at least until I saw the price tag. It was an absolute no go for me, on top of that they do require tightening over time and that kinda bugged me too. I was leaning toward just wire fencing (yes like hog panels) but that felt too rough.
One of the most common and essential pieces of kit for DIY in the garden and home is the claw hammer. With a long handle and a weighted head, they have a face for striking and driving in nails, and a claw for removing nails and prying apart boards. Whether you’re making a hedgehog house, mending fences or building a shed, a claw hammer is a vital tool.
In the area we live in, backyards are very small and are commonly quite close to the neighbors. Even though my yard is enclosed by a fence, I wanted a privacy screen to further separate my backyard space from my neighbor’s house that is very close to mine on the other side. This wood slat screen was the perfect way to add a bit more privacy to my yard, and the contrast of the warm wood with the metal adds a lot of style at the same time. This was a relatively simple and inexpensive DIY project to complete in a weekend to beautify and improve my outdoor living area.
One problem I have is seeing a potential project in just about anything and everything--I'm a self proclaimed crafting hoarder and I'm trying to be better about what I keep so as not to drive Rob completely bonkers. Something that I have a ton of that I know can be used in so many ways is a bin of wine bottles. Whether we've popped open a bottle for dinner with friends or my many friends keeping theirs for me, I've collected them over the years and have actually gotten rid of a lot of them when trying to purge the basement. However, I still have several and thought I'd finally do something with them.

We have a new puppy joining our family at the beginning of next month. So today, I thought it would be a good time to write about preparing a garden for a puppy. If you have an interest in permaculture design, then you may know, or will soon learn, that there are certain phrases that crop up again and again within this arena. One phrase that is commonly used in permaculture circles is «valuing the marginal,» and people often speak or write about the importance of doing so.
Much of what we do in sustainable land management and permaculture design revolves around repairing the damage that humanity has done. How and where we are able to do so is a very important thing to consider and to talk about as we aim to move forwards into a more eco-friendly and sustainable future.

The courtship of Helen and Jerry Unruh was long-distance. “He had a florist deliver a rose to me every day,” Helen recalls. After two years, a bloom arrived with a card reading, “Will you marry me?” That was in 1975. Today, Jerry still indulges his wife’s love of flowers: They have 1,700 azalea bushes at their home in Odessa, Delaware—all squeezed onto their 1 1∕4-acre property. “They are such gorgeous things in the springtime,” says Helen. “It makes you happy you’re alive.”
If you're looking for tidier-looking plants with healthy blooms, learning how to deadhead and prune your roses is important. Home gardeners who grow modern roses, including the relatively new shrub or landscape rose bushes, should consider these techniques essential to the plant's care. Before making any snips to your plant, though, it's important to consider the type of rose, how it blooms, and the time of season. Here's what you need to know to encourage blooms on your roses.
Whether you have a small suburban plot or a big, rambling yard in the country, chances are your garden attracts the resident wildlife. But if you’re tired of animals using your garden as a buffet, there are a few things you can do to reduce damage to a more tolerable level. “Nothing is foolproof, and there’s no one-size-fits-all technique,” says Michael Mengak, PhD, Certified Wildlife Biologist and professor atWarnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources at the University of Georgia. “You’ll need to combine a few methods for the best results.”
Poison ivy(Toxicodendron radicans) is a vine that contains an oily resin known as urushiol. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when the oil comes in contact with the skin, it can result in contact dermatitis, often presenting as a red, itchy rash with blisters or bumps. While poison ivy can be identified (and thus avoided) using a few key indicators outlined in the next section, it’s particularly concerning in areas where children and pets play, as they likely will not know how to differentiate it from other innocuous plants.

A fence is a structure that is typically made of wood, metal, vinyl, or other materials and is erected to enclose or mark the boundaries of a property or area. Fences serve various purposes, including privacy, security, decoration, and defining property lines.
Fences can be found in residential, commercial, and agricultural settings. They come in a wide range of styles, designs, and heights to suit different needs and aesthetic preferences. Some common types of fences include picket fences, privacy fences, chain-link fences, wrought iron fences, and electric fences.
Privacy fences are designed to block the view from outside and provide privacy to the property owners. They often have solid panels or closely spaced boards. Picket fences, on the other hand, are characterized by evenly spaced vertical boards or pickets and are more decorative than functional.
