Although the government’s Council of Economic Advisors confirms that food inflation rates have been cooling, the average household will spend about 6 percent more this year on food than last year, according to the latest estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. So, it’s still an excellent time to tap into the powers of our best budget-friendly tips for healthy eating.

Back in May, Lex Madden, bar manager at Point Easy in Denver, Colorado, told BHG that “the spritz is absolutely the drink of summer!” 

The biggest food trends of 2023 prove that some foods once reserved for the health-food crowd canbe cool, creative, and crave-able. 

Even with our best-laid meal prep plans, we’re sometimes left lunchless on the busiest of workdays. Yes, we know it’s almost always healthier and more affordable to assemble something ourselves rather than resort to fast food when the clock strikes noon—but sometimes we forget or run out of time. When this situation arises, we’ll gladly take a grab-and-go option over skipping a meal any day.

First came feta, which brought with it an outrageous amount of baked feta pasta and whipped feta dip recipes. Then came cottage cheese, and that dairy-based food trend du jour added a flurry of savory recipes, such as pizza toasts and pasta sauces. Then things snowballed into a storm of sweet recipes ranging from edible cookie dough and “ice cream”—all made with cottage cheese.

As far as we're concerned, every season is spritz season. And while, yes, we named the Hugo spritz the drink of summer 2023, we're planning to enjoy the sparkling libations all year long.

No food signifies summer more than watermelon. We’re so sweet on the hot pink (or yellow) fruit that we designed an entire watermelon bar party showcasing the many ways to snack on, sip, and even centerpiece-ify the hydrating produce item.

The winter holidays might steal the spotlight as the season for sparkling wine, but we firmly believe that summer is where it’s at. (That said, there’s no wrong time of year to open a bottle of bubbly, if you ask us!) When the temperatures rise and we’re spending more time than usual in the sun (slathered in SPF, of course), we don’t crave a heavy IPA, potent bourbon-based cocktail, or powerful red wine. Instead, we find ourselves gravitating toward lower-ABV, ultra-refreshing (and hydrating!) spritzes.
