It's easy to get in a festive mood when you see your local shops decorated to the nines or watch your favorite holiday movies on repeat. But you don’t necessarily want your home to look like said shops or movies.
While pumpkins and snowmen galore are fun to see outside, it’s important that your home still feels livable—especially if you like a more subtle decorating approach. That doesn’t mean you can’t have any holiday decor at all. It’s just a matter of styling the right items to get a more chic and refined look.
Not sure where to start? We tapped an interior design expert for her top tips on how to decorate for the holidays in a fun yet fresh way—without the gaudy decor.

When it comes to the holidays, it’s easy to reach for the most obvious motifs. During fall, that often looks like pumpkins and sunset-hued leaves. In winter, it could look like snowmen and Christmas trees.
While these are certainly fun decor options in moderation, too much of them can end up feeling garish—particularly if they aren’t made from natural materials.
For a more elegant look, Brooke Spreckman, principal designer and founder of Design Hutch, suggests using items you already have on hand and sprucing them up in new ways.
“I would avoid faux or plastic wherever you can and use actual decor, such as vases and bowls you could typically use year-round,” she says. “Yet, style them with fresh and festive florals.”
