The record existed until 1976 when Bob Ford of Coatesville, Pennsylvania,
USA exhibited a 451 pound specimen at the U.S. Pumpkin Contest in Churchville,
PA. Yearly International Competition was revived again in 1979 when Canadian
Howard Dill of Windsor, Nova Scotia won his first of four consecutive
international pumpkinship titles at the Cornell Contest in Pennsylvania. Mr.
Dill’s first world record of 459 pounds came in 1980 which he supassed in 1981
by harvesting a 493.5 pound pumpkin.
In 1984 American grower Norman Gallagher of Chelan, Washington set a new
world mark of 612 pounds at the second annual World Pumpkin Confederation
Weigh-Off.
In 1986, Bob Gancarz of Wrightstown, New Jersey entered an astonishing 671
pound pumpkin at the WPC Weigh-Off Capitol in Collins, New York. Leonard
Stellpflug broke the world record in the squash class in 1988 when he grew a
653.5 pounder. In 1989, three specimens broke the 700 pound barrier while
GordonThomson of Hemmingford, Quebec, Canada won the day and the World Record
at the WPC Weigh-Off in Collins, with his 755 pound pumpkin. In the squash
class, Leonard Stellpflug broke his own record to reestablish the World Record
title with a 743 pound specimen. In the 1990 contest, Ed Gancarz has a pumpkin
specimen weighing in at 816.5 pounds, while Len Stellpflug had an 807 pound
squash. Stellpflug, earlier in the season grew a 821 pound world record making
him the first ever to grow two 800 pound specimens in a single year. The 300
pound watermelon is still elusive although Waddell Estep entered a 245 pounder.
Ray Waterman, the WPC President, entered a 99 inch world record long gourd. In
1991 more growers entered the 700 lb. club with all five being entered at
Collins. Ray Waterman and
Jessica Atkins of Texas A&M University and Sara Oliveira Santos at Brown University have published preliminary results suggesting that commonly used gardening techniques could help grow chickpeas on the Moon.
If there’s one thing celebrity recipes are guaranteed to do, it’s spark a (lightly-controversial) conversation in the comments of their social media. Reese Witherspoon did just that after she shared a new creation with the world on TikTok January 18: a mug of snow mixed with cold brew topped with salted caramel and chocolate drizzle.

In their quest for the world’s heavyweight champion, some pumpkin growers will do almost anything.
In 2024, design is taking a turn away from pastels and towards the boldness of jewel tones.
When it comes to sculptural form in the garden, it’s hard to compete with a well-grown agave (Agave spp. and cvs., Zones 7b–11). With sizes ranging from 6-inch rosettes to hulking 12-foot giants, there really is a perfect plant for every garden or container. Most are striking enough in their natural tones of green to blue, but some have raised the bar a bit higher, adding highlights of white and gold to the palette.
In his classic book Mormon Country, author Wallace Stegner noted that nineteenth century Mormons planted rows of Lombardy poplar trees wherever they established settlements in the territory that is now Utah. The trees served as windbreaks and boundary markers, but they were also the flags that marked the advance of Mormon civilization in a hostile territory. In my hometown and lots of other towns all over the United States elm trees served a similar function, marking the spread of middle class residential neighborhoods during the end of the nineteenth and the first third of the twentieth centuries. In the 1960’s almost all of those tall elegant trees fell prey to Dutch Elm Disease, making each municipality a little poorer.
Planting a tree takes a lot of thought. We may have to consider if we want a tree that is:
We were fortunate to win at Half Moon Bay, California this year. The competition was intense with 80 entries, 10 of which were over 1,000 pounds. The weigh-off is always on Columbus Day. The winner stays until the following weekend to participate in the HMB Pumpkin Festival.
Don’t just chop them up at Halloween, used in soups, pies, and stuffed, pumpkins make a delicious addition to our autumn menus. Fiona Lawrenson spills the beans
Approximately 180 species of gladiolus are available to the gardener. Originating from South Africa on rocky slopes, marshy areas and grasslands, they are also found growing in the Mediterranean, Asia and Central Europe. The latin name “Gladiolus” means “small sword”, which is referring to the shape of the leaves and flower spike. They were at one time referred to, as “sword lilies” or “corm lilies”, as the plants are formed from round, flattened bulbs, called “corms”.
As with fashion, floriculture also has its trends. Dutch botanist Jacqueline van der Kloet signals two color trends.
