The Spaghetti Hot Dog Is Causing Quite a Controversy

The latest and greatest in the terrific (and slightly terrifying) world of innovative food mashups comes a creation likely no one asked for: the spaghetti hot dog. Just what it sounds like. Chef and content creator Jo Shelkin (aka @thejoshelkin) posted the controversial recipe to his Instagram for his followers to enjoy—or actively despise.

Starting his tutorial off strong, Shelkin skewers a hot dog with uncooked spaghetti (yes, you read that right) and cooks them both in a pot of boiling water as you normally would. Once al dente, he lays out the noodles and tops them with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese. Next, he rolls the dog over the dressed-up noodles and drops the entire concoction into sliced bread rolls.

Rather than using a hot dog bun, Shelkin opts for Hawaiian rolls. This is something we can definitely get behind—not only are the rolls more flavorful than regular buns, they also crisp up nicely while staying soft on the inside. Shelkin spreads garlic butter on both the inside and outside of the buns, adds the hot dog and spaghetti mashup, sprinkles it with parmesan, and bakes it.

Don’t get us wrong, most of the recipe looks delicious. As for the spaghetti part, well… We’re not so sure. Neither were most of the commenters on Shelkin’s post.

“Straight to prison,” reads one top comment. “Where’s those Italian brothers who are really protective over Italian food,” asked another.
