Poppies, paths and permanent border planting

The latest addition to the garden is a Gardman poppy bird feeder. I’ve popped it in the border and filled it with seed for the moment, but it can be used as a water dish in the summer – it’s made from painted cast iron. I was given mine by Gardman for review purposes, but they’re being sold to raise money for The Royal British Legion, as part of their annual poppy appeal. Gardman want to raise £200,000 for the charity, and 50p from the sale of each feeder will be donated. There’s a special bird food range to go with it, also including a donation to the poppy appeal.

Poppies from Seed

Georgia O’Keefee painted some brilliant portraits of red Poppies some times upto 3 feet wide and high, even bigger than the real thing in my garden. The last photo shows how Red and Green work well together on a canvas or in a garden setting. Oriental poppies are perennial and most Poppy species are easy to grow from seed of which 50 varieties are available from Thompson & Morgan

Think before you allow poppies to proliferate. Poppies rob a lot of goodness from your soil.

More and Better Californian Poppies

This is largely from a post I did in 2013 with some updates. Seeing the colour in my garden and watching the single flowers close up for the evening I decided to buy some more seeds for next summer (I hope I can find the space to do them justice) I opted for ‘Copper Swirl’ by TM and for an extra 99p I got ‘Golden West Californian Poppy’ thrown in.  I am tempted to sow half of each packet shortly although the blurb on the packet suggests waiting until Feb or March next year.

Green and Red Compliment your Spring Garden

The two best complimentary colours are Red and Green.  There are many ways this is demonstrated in the spring garden and they will be sure to draw compliments. The Peonies are just opening under a bit of shelter and shade.

Corn Poppies

Corn poppies (Papaver rhoeas) are charming little darlings whom I let mischievously wander around my garden from season to season, deciding upon a new piece of real estate to make their home. Their eager-to-spread nature is due to their abundance of seeds produced from its seed pod, an exquisitely crafted trinket that releases its seeds in a rather clever and advantageous way.

Slideshow: springtime’s shrubs on parade

S HRUBS ARE THE PEOPLE-SIZED PART OF THE LANDSCAPE, the middle layer that you cannot make a garden without. If you go and skip the shrubs, the transition from tree to perennial is just too drastic, don’t you think? I tried to pick one kind to profile today—lilacs, perhaps, or twig dogwoods (both in the photo above and both treating me to a show at the moment) or maybe a viburnum?—but I failed to single anybody out.

Doodle by andre: raining on her parade

The latest doodle makes me think of a few older, tender ones Andre’s drawn for us about longing, including these:The message from a little bird. And even this one, of a wriggly reunion. Or this thank-you note a Christmas or two ago. You can always browse through the thumbnail images of Andre’s garden doodles starting at this link. Enjoy.Tagsandre jordan

Teachers from on high: my bird essay in ‘parade’

IWROTE A PIECE FOR TODAY’S ‘PARADE’ MAGAZINE about birds, and how many things these avian messengers have taught–and continue to teach–me. It’s a theme in my new memoir “And I Shall Have Some Peace There.” The birds that visit me are among the book’s leading characters, in fact.
