GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
Poppies (Papaver spp. and cvs., Zones 3–9) are one of the most beloved and desirable garden flowers, but they aren’t as easy to please as many sources make them out to be. While there are those who will claim that they are the easiest flowers to grow since they often self-seed around the garden with abandon, poppies—especially the annual species—remain challenging to grow for many gardeners. Below I’ll go over some common annual and perennial poppy species, some recommended varieties of each, and how to make them thrive in your garden.
Back in June, friend of the GPOD Cherry Ong attended the Vancouver Hardy Plant Study Weekend and was kind enough to share photos of some of the gardens that she toured. Today she’s taking us along to visit Gwen and Paul’s gorgeous garden and nursery.

I love bananas, they’re my favourite all year round fruit. I’ve decided to stop eating them for a month to see what happens, and if I don’t get a migraine at all in that time then I’ll have to find another favourite fruit that isn’t too expensive.

Ever wondered what a biennial plant is? Or what makes them different from perennials or annuals? Don't worry, you're not alone. We're here to break down the confusing gardening jargon to make your dream garden become a reality. So, what is a biennial plant? Here's what you should know. What is a biennial plant? The term 'biennial' is often heard alongside perennials and annuals. But what is a biennial? Biennial plants are classified as such due to their life cycle. Biennial plants have a two year life cycle, producing foliage in their first year, flowers in their second, and dying back at the end of that second year. This is different from an annual or perennial. Annuals last for just one year, whereas perennials can flower for several years without fault. It's important to know what kind of life cycle your blooms have. For example, if you thought your perennial plant was actually a biennial, you might be disappointed in the lack of flowers in its first year! Biennials are similar to perennials in that they will reappear after their flowering year. This is because they self-seed, producing more blooms for years to come. Learn more about annuals in our 'what is an annual plant?' blog. What plants are biennials? Many biennials are hiding in plain sight! For example, foxgloves are biennials, but you may have thought they were perennials as they're usually grouped with other perennials like delphiniums. Forget me not's are also biennial, but look almost like an annual as they are more compact, like your typical bedding plant. Biennials to know and grow

Taking root cuttings is a great way to propagate herbaceous perennials during the colder months while the plants are dormant. The process is simple and effective: it can yield lots of healthy and vigorous new plants from just one parent plant. Try it with Japanese anemones, oriental poppies, verbascum, acanthus and drumstick Primula denticulata.

The latest addition to the garden is a Gardman poppy bird feeder. I’ve popped it in the border and filled it with seed for the moment, but it can be used as a water dish in the summer – it’s made from painted cast iron. I was given mine by Gardman for review purposes, but they’re being sold to raise money for The Royal British Legion, as part of their annual poppy appeal. Gardman want to raise £200,000 for the charity, and 50p from the sale of each feeder will be donated. There’s a special bird food range to go with it, also including a donation to the poppy appeal.

Think before you allow poppies to proliferate. Poppies rob a lot of goodness from your soil.
This is largely from a post I did in 2013 with some updates. Seeing the colour in my garden and watching the single flowers close up for the evening I decided to buy some more seeds for next summer (I hope I can find the space to do them justice) I opted for ‘Copper Swirl’ by TM and for an extra 99p I got ‘Golden West Californian Poppy’ thrown in. I am tempted to sow half of each packet shortly although the blurb on the packet suggests waiting until Feb or March next year.
