I Tried Making This Viral DIY Tray, and It Took Less Than 5 Minutes

There is nothing worse than finding an adorable home decor DIY, buying a ton of materials, and starting a project—only to find it's a hundred times more complicated than it appeared in the slick, edited video you saved on socials.
As a homes writer and editor, this has happened to me more times than I'd care to admit— but trying out this luxe little DIY shelf by @theflippedpiece was not one of them.
This affordable project required minimal materials, was as quick and simple as it looked, and the final result was a versatile piece I could use in any area.

When I first stumbled upon the inspiration video, I instantly envisioned a shelf of my own styled on a kitchen countertop as a mini matcha-making station, or in the bedroom as a form of vanity organization, displaying bottles of skincare and perfume that are too pretty to be hidden away.
No matter where it ended up, I planned for this shelf to be a focal point, and was very selective when sourcing the materials I used for this project.
Luckily, there is a local tile company just around the corner from my apartment. Artisans of Devizes had a dreamy selection of painted tiles, slabs of stone, terracotta, and porcelain to pick from.
In sticking to the original video, I honed in on a stunning pink marble tile sample with blush, coral, and gray veining, and a subtle shimmer throughout.
Although the tile ledges used to support the shelf wouldn't be super-visible, I also made sure they were a similar, neutral marble and the same length as the surface tile.
Although the video calls the shelf support tiles ledges, you may also find these narrow pieces labeled as tile trim, tile beading, or pencil tiles when you're searching.
