Six on Saturday: Room for More Roses…?

Not long after stating publicly on this blog that I didn’t expect to find room for more roses, it occurred to me, in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way, that extending the small bed behind the shed following removal of the tree stump might in fact just do this after all! The original bed housed rambling rose ‘Rosemarie Viaud’, which rambles over the shed roof, and repeat flowering old rose ‘Rose de Rescht’, but if the latter were replanted elsewhere there would be space for a trio of modern shrub roses, planted to together to give the suggestion of a large bush, as has recently been done in the rose garden.

In New Book, Relationship Between US Dairy Farmers and Mexican Workers Laid Bare

Since 2003, the US has lost about half of its licensed dairy farms. However, the number of cows producing milk has stayed relatively steady. Take Wisconsin, for example. In 2004, the state was home to less than 16,000 dairy farms. In 2021, that number dropped in half, to less than 7,000 farms. But the number of cows in the state? That didn’t change. There are still about 1.2 million cows in Wisconsin. They’re just part of much bigger herds these days. That means that smaller farms are getting squeezed out in favor of industrial farming and Confined Animal Feeding Operations, commonly referred to as CAFOs, in which large numbers of animals are raised, generally in confinement, and feed is brought to them, rather than letting them graze.

The traditional stone farmhouse stands on a limestone outcrop in the Chianti hills. Planting Plan of A Seaside Garden that Sustains Punishing Conditions

Susan Burke’s home and garden on the Nantucket shoreline off the coast of Massachusetts were designed from scratch when she and her late husband first purchased the property. Featuring tall borders of naturalistic plantings and hardscaping that weave off into nature in the backyard, this space also has a more formal garden in the front yard consisting mostly of native plants. A large dune comes up from the beach, where a buffer of native flora divides the garden from the beach beyond.

We are forecast more days like this, and I feel confident of beginning to plant up the cutting beds.
