The bay leaves plant is usually sold in pot but if you don’t find one, propagate it from seeds or cutting.
Fill the seedling tray with good quality seed starting mix. Spread the seeds on soil roughly 2-inches apart.
Gently press the seeds a bit and cover the seeds with 1/8 inch layer of soil mix and moisten the soil.
Keep the tray in the shade, at temperature of around 70° F and constantly moist (use a sprayer for moistening the soil) until the time of germination.
It will take 10 days to 6 months to germinate. Once the seeds have sprouted, increase the amount of light and ensure good ventilation.
When seedling have grown several inches long transplant them to bigger pot.
To propagate bay leaf from cuttings take several cuttings that are at least 6 inches long from parent plant.
It is recommended to make a cut using a sharp shear to prevent any damage in cuttings. Make sure that the tool you use is properly cleaned and disinfected to avoid infection.
Strip all the leaves from cuttings except top 2 leaves and dip them in rooting hormone.
Fill the tray or pot with soil, you can either use starting mix or make yourself by mixing one part soil, one part peat and one part perlite. Water the soil and poke holes in soil with the help of a pencil. Carefully insert all the cuttings in holes and gently firm the soil.
Cover the cuttings using transparent plastic bag and place it away from sunlight. Try to maintain temperature around 60 ° F, taking care to keep the soil slightly moist. Every day take off the plastic cover to control the humidity.
Once the cuttings have rooted, remove the bag and slowly acclimate them to less humid condition.
After they have grown a few new buds and several inch long roots, transplant them to bigger pots.
