‘HOW DID YOU LEARN to garden?” People ask me that all the time. At first I learned from books, and from old-style seed catalogs, and then from mentors. And then I started to learn from people who visited my garden. No kidding. From total strangers. More on that—and the program called Garden Conservancy Open Days–plus a chance to win tickets to visit private gardens this year yourself, and details on how to maybe open yours.About 18 years ago, I began opening my place to the national garden-visiting program of the Garden Conservancy called Open Days. Its director, Laura Palmer, was my latest radio guest—and we talked about where around the country you can visit hundreds of private gardens, and also how you can decide to share your garden, too.
The reason I say I started learning as a result from strangers who visit: I notice someone across the yard looking at something, or using their camera, and I think: “What are they looking at? There’s nothing over in that spot!”
No matter how I try to direct people, or tell them how to move through the place and what to look at, they just don’t see the garden the way I do–and as a result, I have a lot of “aha’s” from their visits, plus their impending arrival keeps me true to a strict cleanup and prep schedule each spring. Having visitors will definitely improve your garden skills…and you can get involved (or at least come visit hundreds of private American gardens), as Laura and I discussed in the latest podcast.

A. This is our 20th season, and over the years we’ve opened about 3,000 gardens in about 30 different states—not all at the same time, of course. This year we’re

Today we celebrate Earth Day for the 46th time since U.S. senator Gaylord Nelson suggested the idea for a national day focusing on the environment. After its first celebration on April 22 1970 in the US, Earth Day has grown into a worldwide environmental movement raising awareness of serious issues such as pollution, global warming, deforestation and the detrimental effect of urbanised societies on the environment.

I originally wrote this last year but now in April I have checked my Chrysanthemum plants in the cold greenhouse and find I am infested! So it must be worth a rerun. Evil weevil grubs eat roots and tubers of your favourite plants. My tuberous begonias were attacked and destroyed by these pesky pests. It is the white grubs that cause the damage as they eat roots and tubers throughout vine weevil puberty to become small black beetles. The beetles will nibble the edges of leaves but it is the laying of eggs that ultimately cause the problem. The eggs become grubs and your Cyclamen, Primula and Camellias become grub for weevils. Pot grown plants are most susceptible to attack but this pest also affects other plants such as Fuchsias, Gloxinia and Strawberries.
Peace is not just the absence of war it can be a reflection of a personal inner tranquility. To many gardeners peace may be a state of harmony with nature. It is a theme of several ‘hard landscape’ projects and sculptural works as shown by the selection of Peace gardens below.

After my first baby was born, I came to realize that with parenting comes advice. A lot of it. Advice on how to get the baby to sleep. Advice on how to give the baby a bath. And CONSTANTLY – advice on how to feed the baby. It comes from every direction, most often from your mother-in-law and frequently from complete strangers without children. Sometimes this well-intended advice is good and is followed by “because the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends it”. But sometimes it is not so good and is supported with rationale like “because I fed it to you, and you turned out just fine”.
