La diabetes es una enfermedad crónica caracterizada por niveles de azúcar en sangre altos a causa de un problema con su insulina. Los problemas son cuando su cuerpo no produce insulina suficiente o cuando su cuerpo no puede usar la insulina eficazmente. La insulina es una hormona necesaria que ayuda azúcar entrar a las células para darles energía. Sin un nivel de insulina suficiente, el azúcar va a quedar en su sangre y puede causar a muchos problemas con su salud. Según el Reporte Nacional de Estadística de Diabetes, una publicación de los Centros de Control y Prevención (CDC), 34,2 millones de personas en los Estados Unidos viven con diabetes, que es 10,5 porcentaje de la población.
Hay dos tipos diferentes de la diabetes, tipo 1 y tipo 2. Tipo 1 ocurre porque el cuerpo no produce insulina, la hormona que el cuerpo necesita para mover el azúcar de la sangre a las células para energía. Tipo 1 puede ser manejado con terapia de insulina en combinación con cambios de estila de vida saludables. Tipo 2 es el tipo más común y ocurre cuando el cuerpo no usa la insulina eficazmente. Tipo 2 puede ser manejado con una combinación de comer comida saludable, ejercicio y medicamentos, que incluye la insulina. Mantiene un peso saludable, dieto y actividad física son claves para controlar ambos tipos de la diabetes.
