If you’re looking for extra seating options in your dorm room, Toombs suggests looking for items that can work double duty.
“When looking for furniture for a dorm room, remember less is more,” Toombs says. “When you’re working with a very small room like a dorm, you want to maximize your space as much as possible.”
This is also why Toombs says to look for benches and ottomans with internal storage. These are a definite space-saving must-have.

It’s fairly common to raise or loft your bed in your dorm room, notes Toombs, but the key is to make the most of this area.
She suggests looking for plastic storage options, ideally stackable. She especially loves cube storage organizers for this reason—they can be used for everything from dry food to toiletries to school supplies.
“Anytime you can have layers and stacks of things that are organized, go for it,” Toombs says.
