A new season brings the perfect opportunity to start fresh, whether that means trying out a new morning process or getting organized once and for all. For Meg Markland of Neat by Meg, it’s all about getting back into a routine.
“Pre-fall is my favorite time of year to get organized,” she says. “I travel a lot during the summer, and I love getting home and settling back into a routine with an organized home to start the school year.”
Joanna Wirick of Joanna Organize says the time between late summer and early fall is also a great time to reassess changing needs as the family transitions to more fall-centric activities (hello, back-to-school) and organize with a new mission in mind.
But, getting organized can be a daunting process if you don’t know where to start. To keep your pre-fall organizing manageable, Markland, Wirick, and Jamie Hord, founder of Horderly Professional Organizing, share their top items and spaces for decluttering that can be accomplished in a flash.

If you’re the type who stores out-of-season clothes in another area (out of necessity or preference), now is a great time to make the swap. Sweaters, winter accessories, and boots can take up a lot of real estate in the closet, so take stake as you swap out your wardrobe and donate anything that’s no longer of use.
“Make sure you’re only keeping the best of the best and letting go of anything that has had its time,” Hord says.

We have all heard the saying “Fall is for Planting,” but this adage does not hold true for all plants. Autumn is an excellent time to establish many trees, shrubs, and perennials, thanks to cooler temperatures and more frequent rains. These conditions put less stress on plants as they establish their root systems. Yet despite these advantages, not all plants benefit from fall planting. As the autumn weather draws you back into the garden it’s important to consider which plants you should never plant in fall.

When Neil Patterson Jr. was about 7 or 8 years old, he saw a painting called “Gathering Chestnuts,” by Tonawanda Seneca artist Ernest Smith. Patterson didn’t realize that the painting showed a grove of American chestnuts, a tree that had been all but extinct since his great-grandparents’ time. Instead, what struck Patterson was the family in the foreground: As a man throws a wooden club to knock chestnuts from the branches above, a child shells the nuts and a woman gathers them in a basket. Even the dog seems engrossed in the process, watching with head cocked as the club sails through the air.
