Growing a vegetable garden, especially for the first time, can be downright intimidating. Whether you are concerned about space, soil, or planting techniques, there are so many variables to consider that even the most experienced gardeners will admit it: they sometimes make mistakes.
Since everybody makes mistakes, we turned to expert gardeners for their insight. While they offered up a list of common mistakes, we were thrilled to learn that every problem has a solution.

The most common mistake, says Nikhil Arora of Back to the Roots, is choosing the wrong location. Obviously, this is best sorted by planning ahead, considering what you want to plant, and what conditions are required so those plants thrive.
But, if you’ve already started planting in the “wrong” spot, it’s okay. Arora notes that you just need to assess your conditions and let that dictate what you plant. The most important factors, he notes, are well-draining soil and the right amount of sun.

If you’re holding off on starting your veggie garden because you don’t have enough room, Arora says this is a common myth. In reality, any space will do if you plan correctly.
“You can grow vegetables in containers, raised beds, or even on your windowsill, making it possible to have a bountiful garden in small spaces like balconies or patios,” Arora says.
