«When cleaning out a junk drawer, empty all the contents and sort the items into categories,» says Andria Eckert, an interior designer with the Austin-based CG&S Design-Build. «All items you do not use or need on a daily basis should be discarded or stored elsewhere. Then organize the remaining contents back in the drawer using dividers.”
For Shara Koplowitz, owner of the Los Angeles-based professional organizing company Open At Home, cleansing a junk drawer means throwing out the random keys you no longer know the use for.
“Get rid of those mystery keys! You know, the ones I’m talking about. They tend to lurk in the bottom of the junk drawer and you have no idea what they actually unlock,» Koplowitz says.
