Change in the Garden – Gardening

The best thing about early spring is seeing something new daily in the garden. Of course, the pundits would say that if you have done your garden properly, you should see something new every day of the gardening season, but that is another issue. In spring the pace of growth accelerates, and the plants almost seem to be in a competition to see who sends up the first shoots. Last week I couldn’t find a trace of any of my many hostas. Today, when I took my daily inspection tour, I found that most of them were at least an inch out of the ground.

Native Spring Shows

It’s Joseph in Northern Indiana here today. As spring arrives, so many of our gardens are full of daffodils and tulips and other examples of spring-blooming species from around the world that I thought I’d take a moment to celebrate the spring bloomers that are native to my part of the world. The woodlands of the eastern half of North America are full of native spring-blooming wildflowers that just don’t get as much appreciation in gardens as some of the European species we’re all so familiar with.

Plants for a Purpose: spring containers

There’s nothing like a spring container to celebrate the fact that we’ve turned the corner, leaving winter behind us. From bright yellow daffodils that yell ‘Spring!’ to more subtle narcissus that whisper the change of season, or from the lush green of ferns to a sweet-shop display of tulips, there’s a spring container for everyone. And the beauty of a container (a small one at any rate) is that it’s portable so you can move your pot of joy to wherever you’ll see it most – right on your front doorstep, or just outside the kitchen window so you can gaze at it while doing the dishes! Our choices include recommendations from the Gardeners’ World team and familiar faces from across the gardening industry.

In a Vase on Monday: Keen as Mustard

Many people think of daffodils as the harbingers of spring, but we gardeners know there can be many other early spring treasures delighting us before most of the daffodils begin to emerge. Whatever we think of yellow blooms, however, there is still something pleasingly cheery about daffodils and narcissi of various types although personally, I prefer the smaller varieties and those that are – yes, I have to admit it – less yellow.

Bulb Blues

Not long ago, I was talking to a gardening friend. The subject was spring bulbs, and her lament was that she just didn’t have the time to get them in the ground. “I’ve given up buying bulbs,” she said, “because every year they end up rotting in my garage.” I can sympathize with her, because of every fall, at least in my little corner of the world, sinister forces conspire to take away the weekends that I intended to spend planting all the bulbs that I ordered back in August.

Autumn Dilemma

It used to be so easy in my father’s day. In mid-winter, gardeners received mail-order catalogs from many far-flung nurseries and plant purveyors. Mailboxes groaned under the weight of all the catalogs, but no one minded because there is nothing like looking at pages and pages of perfect annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees on a gray, uninspiring day at the end of January. With the holidays over and spring yet to happen, catalogs satisfied the universal hunger for color, light, and rebirth. Besides, unless there is a flu epidemic, nothing else happens between New Year’s and Valentine’s Day.

Welcome to the Daffodils section of our website diygarden.cc.

Daffodils, also known by their botanical name Narcissus, are a type of spring-blooming bulbous flowering plant. They belong to the Amaryllidaceae family and are native to Europe and North Africa.

Plants are well-known and beloved for their bright and cheerful appearance, making them popular ornamental plants in gardens, parks, and landscapes. The flowers of daffodils typically have a central trumpet-shaped corona surrounded by six petal-like tepals, giving them their classic trumpet or cup shape. The color of the flowers can vary, with shades of yellow being the most common, but they can also come in white, orange, and even pink hues.

Daffodils are among the early spring bloomers, often heralding the arrival of spring with their vibrant display of color. They are cold-hardy and can tolerate cool temperatures, which is why they are often one of the first flowers to bloom after winter. These spring beauties are easy to grow and require minimal care.

They thrive in well-draining soil and prefer a sunny to partially shaded location. Once planted, daffodils can naturalize and multiply over time, creating larger and more impressive displays in subsequent years.
