The World’s Biggest Onion was so enormous that it was big enough for many families for the use in their full day meal! Here’s how it broke the record!
In September 2021, the Guinness World Record for the heaviest onion is held by Tony Glover from the United Kingdom. In 2014, he grew an onion weighing 18 pounds 1 ounce (8.16 kilograms). This impressive onion was grown in Leicestershire, England.
Tony Glover, a resident of Moira in Leicestershire, UK, achieved this remarkable feat by breaking the Guinness World Records‘ record for the heaviest onion.
Weighing an astonishing 18 pounds and 11 ounces (8.195 kilograms) and measuring 32 inches around its widest part, this enormous vegetable earned Mr. Glover the title and set a new world record for the Heaviest Onion, as confirmed by the World Record Academy.
It took him approximately 11 months of dedicated cultivation to grow this oversized onion, surpassing the previous record held by Peter Glazebrook by 10 ounces. Glazebrook’s onion weighed 18 pounds and 1.5 ounces.
The impressive onion from Mr. Glover’s backyard garden has garnered significant attention, with its size equivalent to 250 regular onions, French onion soup for 36 people, or 50 portions of onion rings.
According to reports, the ambitious gardener plans to use the seeds from this record-breaking onion to cultivate an even larger and heavier one in the following year.

My dad’s minimalistic and flexible (but delicious!) recipe for sage and onion stuffing.
The onion flatbreads I made earlier turned out to be absolutely divine. I said I have been honing my flatbread skills, but to be honest I use the Moro flatbread recipe and it’s a doddle. The hardest thing to remember is to start at least an hour before you want to eat them, as you have to give the dough time to rise.
I haven’t felt like gardening much over the last few weeks, and since there’s a lot to do popping outside made feel worse, not better. But on Sunday time and energy coincided, and I spent a happy two hours outside. In the intervening time the garden has transitioned into autumn, which shows off the blueberries at their best!
