We’ve always loved candles, what with the warm light and cozy scents they bring into our home every time we light them.
But candles are really having a moment: hosts want tapered candles on the dinner table and big bright candles on the coffee table. It seems like unique candle arrangements fill up our Pinterest boards and Instagram Reels. And while plain candles can be pretty inexpensive, the more unique designs are not cheap—and you quite literally burn right through them.
TikTok creator Kenzie Marie of @kenziemariehome just posted what might be the least expensive and most fun little DIY hack bound to make all of you boring candles look gorgeous. And all you need is wax paper or contact paper, napkins with designs you love, plain candles, and a blow dryer.
“Perhaps a bit controversial, but I do believe in burning candles even if they are vintage,” Kenzie Marie says in the beginning of her TikTok video that has over 40,000 likes, 14,000 saves, and nearly 340,000 views. “But with that being said, it can be expensive, so look at what I did to decorate these candles. You guys saw these in one of my last videos and lost your minds, so here is a step-by-step.”
“You know I love a napkin hack,” she said.
First, find any decorative napkins you love. She uses a beautiful blue decorative napkin she found at TJ Maxx for a relatively inexpensive price. Start by removing the back layer of the napkin so it’s just the decorative side.
Then, cut the napkin down so it wraps around the candle just once and line it up around it. Here’s where the contact paper or wax paper comes into the picture. Tape the wax paper on top of the napkin so you have two layers around the candle. This will help melt the decoration onto the candle

Bagworms are caterpillars that make homes using twigs and silk. If you see bags hanging from your plants, they might be bagworms, causing harm by eating leaves and adding weight to branches. You can remove them manually, use insecticides with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), or invite birds and wasps to control them. If the problem persists, consult a pest control professional.
If you’re constantly tripping over wayward shoes in your entryway, battling piles of paperwork on your kitchen island, or stepping on LEGOs (ouch!), it’s easy to fall into the frustration a cluttered space can cause.
The news has been awash with UK Environment Secretary Owen Paterson’s issues in relation to the badger cull. There has been fierce opposition to this issue. No one seems certain whether this strategy will help make a positive impact on the reduction of bovine tuberculosis in cattle. With fierce protests and ongoing issues yet to be resolved, it seems this is far from over.
Gardening enthusiasts are not left with too much of choices, when winter approaches. Colder months bring their unique set of challenges, but also bring opportunities for us to grow choicest seeds, bulbs, and cuttings!
We are constantly aiming to make our homes smell welcoming and warm without being overpowering. This leads our cabinets to overflow with candle collections or a constant simmering pot always on the stovetop.
Even if you’re growing on a small scale, rotating your crops is important. Grow the same crop in the same soil over and over again and you’re inviting problems, like a build-up of pests and diseases, or nutritional deficiencies in the soil. Another advantage of moving crops around your plot is that you can follow one crop with another that likes growing in the conditions the previous crop left behind: a win-win situation.
There’s a nightmare scenario among gardeners: you spend hundreds of hours ensuring your plants are happy, healthy, and growing strong, only for your work to be usurped by an unexpected drop in temperature.
January is a time for starting anew and planning for spring. Take notes and plan what you will do once spring weather arrives. Will you plan to add more flowering plants to attract pollinators? Or will you plan to grow a summer vegetable garden? The possibilities are endless, but no matter what you hope to achieve in 2024, pull out your garden journal and make notes on how to make your plans a reality.
