There's no greater luxury than the feel of brand-new towels. Whether you upgraded from shrunk, outdated towels or wanted an aesthetic change, new towels always come with cozy plushness, and unfortunately, a lot of germs.
If you're like us, then we know you're likely bursting at the seams to go ahead and enjoy your new towels, but after speaking with experts, it seems that a trip to the wash beforehand might be in your favor.
While you might be thinking, «the towels are new, surely they're safe to go ahead and use!» our experts both agree that letting them take a spin in the washer first is a great idea.
«Even if those brand-new towels seem ok to use right from the store, they can still be hiding dust, particles, and bacteria. This goes for all towels: bath, hand, and kitchen towels,» says Tucker. «A quick wash removes any possible chemicals from the manufacturer and any particles from the store that may have attached themselves to them.»
Even if your towels aren't made with chemicals or special finishes, it's still a good idea to wash them for other possible contaminants, and for the fact that so many workers' hands—from factory workers, shipping personnel, store employees, to even customers—have likely touched the fabric prior to packaging.
