Older Americans with mobility challenges and people with disabilities have federally enforced protections and accommodations in public spaces that provide access to buildings, public transportation, and other places. Ramps are constructed for wheelchairs, crosswalks have audible notifications of when it’s safe to continue, and important events include American Sign Language translators for the hearing-impaired. However, in private homes, creating a user-friendly environment for differently abled people isn’t mandated by law.
For those who need accommodations, it can be difficult to find furnishings that not only make it easier for them to maneuver through their rooms but also add style to their living spaces. Enter Michael Graves Design, an accessible design brand, and Pottery Barn, whose new collaboration addresses both function and aesthetics.
The collaboration focuses on the bedroom, where comfort and ease of use are crucial to independence and safety. The accessible bedroom furnishings are adaptations of three of Pottery Barn’s most popular collections—Sausalito, Cayman, and Farmhouse—with all the quality and style you’d want from a piece of Pottery Barn furniture, plus features to accommodate different physical abilities, focusing on accessibility and safety.

Read on for the leafy lovelies you can add anywhere from bookshelves to backyard borders that will wrap up your summer with a botanical banger.
When it comes to landscape design that makes you want to linger, the team at ORCA knows how to put together a plant palette. Turns out they also make their own clay pavers, Adirondack chairs, and other outdoor oasis must-haves. We saw this marriage of product and plants integrated seamlessly into a recent historical Cliff May home in Coronado, CA. The mixture of brass hardware, handmade clay pavers, and rustic wooden accents makes for an outdoor oasis we know Cliff May would have approved of.
If you have a fully operational garbage disposal in your kitchen sink, you’re likely in one of two groups. The first is comprised of conscientious individuals who know exactly what they should and should not toss down to prevent those blades from grinding to a halt.
One of the best parts of move-in day at college is getting to decorate your dorm room (or apartment, house… whatever your housing situation is). It’s probably your first time living outside of your childhood home, so this is your big chance to decorate your own space the way you want to. Have fun with it!
