Although bubblewrapping the Coop in the middle of last week was abandoned after less than an hour, due to numb fingers, there was enough time to notice that two of my 2022 purchases of dwarf pelargoniums were in full bloom and looking surprisingly pretty, considering the time of year. This knowledge was stored in my head and formed the basis of today’s vase, with a single white bloom of P ‘David John’ forming the focal point. He was joined by three stems of Argyranthemum ‘Grandaisy Pink’ (now in the Coop too) and a clutch of foliage from Pittosporum ‘Tom Thumb’. The latter is in dire need of pruning, but for the time being I shall just remain selective about where I snip any foliage from!
Although white, there is a fractional hint of pink in the centre of the pelargonium, and although I am still far from a fan of the genus, I concede its prettiness and that of its frothy pale pink neighbour whose name I have no recollection of (and poor David is likely to follow suit). If they were roses, or snowdrops or a host of other things I would know exactly what they were called! I remembered the name long enough, however, to come up with a title for the vase, but then had a wobble coming up with a suitable prop. No longer having a book of children’s names, I was fortunate to come up with a selection of boy’s names in a ‘Book of Lists’ I have. Only David (‘beloved’) was included in this selection; John, however, means ‘beloved of God’, whilst Tom (Thomas) means ‘twin’ or ‘innocence’.

Apricot (Prunus armeniaca) trees produce delicious fruit in summer and growing your own means the fruit can be enjoyed when they are sweet and meltingly ripe, unlike shop-bought fruit, which must be harvested early to be transported while firm. Apricot trees can be grown successfully outside in warmer parts of the UK, notably the south-east of England. Elsewhere, because the beautiful pink blossom is borne in early spring and is therefore liable to frost damage, only grow apricots in large pots and keep under cover for the colder months. When planted in the right conditions, an apricot tree should start producing fruit within two or three years and live for decades.

Winter heath (Erica carnea, Zones 5-8) is surprisingly absent from our Northeastern gardens. Species in the heath genus (Erica) are often confused or lumped in with heather (Calluna vulgaris, Zones 4-7). While heather cultivars can still be found at many garden centers and online nurseries, you may wish to avoid planting them. This species has been reported as invasive in the Northeast and parts of the Midwest. While it may not appear to spread around one’s garden, in wild areas, especially alpine, high-elevation, and coastal areas, heather has been documented as impacting the displacement of some native plants. Learn more about heaths and heathers.
Some people are particular about the garden tools they use. Others take it less seriously and are content with the cheapest things they can find. I’m somewhere in the middle. I’m not one to waste money on overpriced brands, but I do want durable tools that last a good while. Just as important, they need to do the job and be up for the conditions under which I’ll be using them.
