We have plans for taking care of houseplants based on their age. When you first get a plant, water it and use good soil. As it grows, water it the same way but start using a little fertilizer after six months. After a year, keep watering, feed it more, and you might need to put it in a bigger pot and cut off dead parts.
Not only is every plant different, but every specimen has a different care regime according to its age. To make it a little easier for you, we have created some special plant care pointers according to how old they are.
This is not about growing plants from seeds or cuttings – these also apply to the new plants that you get from the garden center or when you are growing them for cuttings.
At this stage, water the plant thoroughly and allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Keep the soil scantily moist during winter.
Mix one part peat moss-based mix and one part sand or perlite for good drainage. You can also go for a good quality seed starting mix.
Follow the same watering rule that you took in practice for 1 week old plant. Avoid overwatering at all ages.
At this stage, avoid feeding the plant. A good quality potting mix should fulfill all the growing needs of a plant between 1 to 3 months old.
Watering rule is the same at all ages and also according to particular plant’s needs. Reduce watering in winter and never overwater the plant. You can try bottom-watering as well.
At this age, you can give the plant its first dose of feeding. Do note that dilution is important – dilute the recommended dose to 1/4 of its strength and see how the plant responds to it.
From this stage, apply the fertilizer once every 3-4 weeks, maintaining the same strength (1/4th dilution).
