There are certain points of contention in interior design: maximalist or minimalist, vintage or new, carpet or hardwood floors? Another question that seems to garner polarizing opinions: if headboards are really needed in the bedroom.
There are some designers whose spaces will never be seen without one and others who choose to opt-out in exchange for more nontraditional choices.
So, what’s the verdict? We tapped two interior designers for their takes on whether headboards are a bedroom requirement or not—as well as their tips for when it’s appropriate, how to choose the best one, and what to replace it with if you decide a headboard is not for you.

Headboards can offer style and practical solutions for the bedroom, which is why they are so common. Our two tapped designers love using headboards in their designs, citing practicality and polished finishes.
“As a designer, I prefer to use a headboard when designing a bedroom space—not only for aesthetic purposes but for functionality and added comfort,” Nancy Barnett, principal and founder of Nancy Lane Interiors, notes. «This is particularly for those who like to read or work in bed.»
Naïka Andre, principal and owner of NJA Interiors, agrees that headboards can serve a dual function. The choice to keep one or opt out comes down to personal preference—if you are the type to get up in bed and read, then a headboard is utilitarian.
“My personal preference is to have a headboard,” Andre adds. “It's an extra layer of comfort in addition to your propped-up pillows.”
However, she isn’t staunch on this point for everyone. “I've designed bedrooms without headboards—they turned out just as beautiful as the bedrooms with headboards," she says.

Sure, Bambi is cute. But what’s not so cute is when she’s chowing down on yourvegetable garden or devouring yourhostas anddaylilies. Even if you’ve never had deer visiting your yard before, there’s always a first time. And no plant—even those said to be “deer resistant”—is truly safe from their voracious appetites.
If you’re lucky enough to have a backyard deck, you likely want to maximize that extra square footage. But before you purchase new seasonal furniture or decor, keep in mind that if you want them and your deck to last, some items should only earn a temporary spot outdoors.
As the weather warms up, bugs start coming out—it’s a simple and well-known truth. For home gardeners especially, cicadas can be tricky to deal with. Found commonly in the American South, these insects occupy treetops as summer approaches and the air becomes humid.
Summer is nearly here, and with it, comes plenty of time spent out on the green. From picnics to parties to barbeques and everything in between, having a lawn is a pretty lovely way to incorporate some summer fun into your life—but keeping your lawn green and happy isn’t always quite as fun, and green turf isn’t quite as soft and enjoyable, either. That’s what has us so intrigued by the new trend of “lazy lawns.”
Cleaning the dryer vents may not be a chore at the top of your to-do list, but it’s an essential part of maintaining the health and efficiency of your dryer. Not only that, but neglecting to clean your dryer vents poses a fire safety risk for your home.
After seeing the once-beloved all-gray and minimalism trends take a backseat in recent years, it was no surprise another firm favorite might be slipping away, too.
In the arc of an Irish gardening year, May is the month of magical things. The first rose. The first swallow. The first properly hot day. The first beech tree in full leaf. The first sighting of wisteria in magnificent lilac bloom, draping itself languidly against a high, sunny wall. As nature flashes its brilliant feathers, it’s also our last real opportunity before summer finally arrives to make a substantial difference to our gardens or allotments, whether that’s filling them with fast-growing annuals to provide plenty of homegrown produce for the months ahead, planting up spectacular summer containers, or fine-tuning flower borders for maximum impact. With all of this in mind, here’s a handy little to-do list to help you stay on course.
While doing a deep clean or a massive decluttering can be both satisfying and rewarding, most will agree that it’s generally better to tackle your chores on a regular basis. But if you’re trying to create a weekly schedule, where to begin?
If you’re looking to update the flooring in your home—whether with a simple area rug or a full swath of hardwood or ceramic tile—don’t do so without first reviewing the potential missteps that may seem minor but can set back a flooring project or even larger home improvement goals if overlooked.
As someone who shivers at the thought of a chilly breeze, I’m well and truly done with our long, wet, cold spring. So much so, that I find myself daydreaming of brilliant sunshine, blue skies and warm breezes.
It's that time of year when we're summer dreaming, especially about our summer gardens. Choosing which starters and seeds to invest in can be a bit overwhelming, no matter how seasoned you are at it.
