Q. A have a big pot ready for a newly purchased lemon cypress to be placed on my patio. Should I move the plant into it now or leave it in its present pot for a while?
A. You can transplant into the new pot now, but if there is a big difference in size between the current and new pot, be very careful with watering. Keep the potting mix just a little on the dry side as the plant puts out fresh roots in its new home. Those new roots would otherwise be prone to rotting in a wet soil.
Q. Some of the squash seedlings that I planted in pots indoors emerged with the initial leaves discoloured and a little distorted along the edges. What might have caused this?
A. The initial set of “seed” leaves germinating from large, flattish seeds with a strong outer husk like squash and pumpkin are sometimes slightly marred in the process of the seeds disengaging from those leaves as they are emerging. I expect that the seedlings’ “true” leaves, that is foliage typical of the plant, are developing normally now.
Q. I prefer to have my own fresh dill, which I use often, in the garden during the growing season. My problem is the limited space in my boxed plots. Dill takes considerable room. Are there any dwarf varieties?
A. There are compact varieties of dill. Fernleaf seems to be the most commonly available one. The bushy little plants grow to about 40 cm tall, and are well suited for growing in containers and at corners of raised beds.
According to their website West Coast Seeds have Fernleaf currently available. The seeds should be on some of their local seed racks.
