Great April weather has produced a harvest of blossom on my apple trees. With no danger of frost and plenty of insects there should be no problem with pollination. Even the later flowering apples trees have open blossom and this means the essential cross pollination by more than one species will be taking place.

Apple blossom trails spring up around the country, Kent is popular but around the cotswolds and Evesham is best blossom spotting terratory. ‘For the few short weeks between mid March and mid May, the road sides are ablaze with colour – the soft pink tones of cherry and apple blossom contrast with the white of the pear and plum’ around Evesham pdf.

Escallonia, Azalea, Penstemon and Clematis have hybrids named Apple Blossom.
Crab apple trees have similar blossom and there are several ornamental blossoms amongst the circa 7000 apple cultivars.

This is the Royal Horticultural Society symbol for the Award of Garden Merit ‘AGM’. This award indicates that the plant is recommended by the RHS.

Ants can be an unsightly nuisance and inspire concern. However they do not directly damage plants but are more a sign that you have another pest problem.

Late blossom arrivals in 2015 looked like being a good year for apple blossom and thus fruit in the North of England. And iut was with some great crops in my Yorkshire garden.
White is the second most useful colour in the garden after green. I am progressively increasing the number and variety of white and grey plants that I grow.
What can gardeners do in winter? The answer lies in the soil! but to old gardeners it is still ‘Beyond our Ken’. I often spent too long polishing my good intentions this includes planning to send my mower for servicing and sharpening’ a shame I do not plan to polish up my other important gardening implements.
Britain has some of the best gardens in the world. The choice of which to visit is far larger than this selective list but at least it gives you somewhere to start planning this years outings.
In the cold wet winter it is a good time to plan where to visit as the year improves. The South West is the obvious place to start your visiting tour of gardens containing exotic plants.
