The biggest and most expensive purchase most people make in their lives is buying a house. Families and individuals plan for years, sign off on decades long mortgages, and empty their savings account to acquire their own home. But the homeowner headache does not end when you sign your name on a piece of paper (or hundreds and hundreds of pieces of paper, let’s be honest with ourselves); a purchased home does not always mean a livable home.
Aside from simple cosmetic renovations like re-painting, wood stripping, and changing fixtures, it is not uncommon for people to go through major structural renovations to design their dream home, preserve historical elements of their new house, or even revamp fixer uppers. While they give people a chance to understand the roots of their house and mold it to their needs, renovations can be financially and emotionally draining.
Barry Bordelon and Jordan Slocum, aka The Brownstone Boys, know this all too well. After all, renovating homes is their full time job. After renovating 26 homes in just the last 6 years, the pair shared some of the lessons they’ve learned along the way with Better Homes & Gardens.
While buying a home that will require major renovations, you need to consider what the ‘right’ home means for you. A common folly made by people is to choose a house within their budget, go through with the purchase without planning for renovations, and then be slammed with a reality check when they calculate how much the house’s face lift will cost. You have to be careful to learn not just the sale price of the home, but the final price–inclusive of full renovation and interior costs. If not, you will be in a position where you have a house that is in need of some serious remodeling

Fall armyworms (Spodotera frugiperda) are not a welcome visitor in the Southeast. They often appear in large numbers inlate summer to early fall and make the ground appear as if it’s moving as they devour every bit of vegetation in their paths. “They will march across your lawn, just like an army,” says Clint Waltz, PhD, turfgrass extension specialist at theUniversity of Georgia. “The adult moths are not a turf issue, but they lay eggs which become voracious caterpillars that can decimate a lawn and heavily damage certain types of turfgrasses.”
