10 Bold Plants for Winter Interest in the Southeast

Without a doubt one of the best parts about gardening in the Southeast is winters that are temperate yet still bring seasonality to the garden. I’m grateful that we don’t often get bone-chilling cold that lasts for days and weeks on end. Many gardeners in colder climates spend their winters waiting for spring. As gardeners in the Southeast, we can plan for vibrant gardens with winter interest in mind. For our purposes, we will define “winter” as December through February. For this article I will take you on a journey through the plants that are looking good in my winter garden in eastern Tennessee during these few months. I’ve made a note of the date I took the photo of each plant to give you a feeling of how the season progresses throughout my garden in the Southeast.

‘Spring Lace’ Viburnum Is a Compact Workhorse Shrub

In 2017 Bailey Nurseries sent me four ‘Spring Lace’ viburnums to trial. When in flower in spring, they have become one of my most asked-about plants. An interspecific cross developed at the University of Georgia by Michael Dirr, this lovely rounded selection is a relatively compact plant in the viburnum world, reaching its mature size in about 8 to 10 years. ‘Spring Lace’ thrives in average conditions and is relatively drought tolerant once established. It doesn’t skip a beat in the heat and humidity of the South and has been such an outstanding performer that we now grow it for our plant sales.

Choosing A Peach Variety for the Backyard

The peach is an iconic fruit in the southeastern United States, and many backyard gardeners consider a peach tree to be a good addition to their gardens. Planting season is upon us. Peach trees should be planted during winter while fully dormant. One of the most common questions from backyard growers is always, “What is a good variety to plant?” Here are a few other questions to think about when purchasing a peach tree for your backyard.

American Holly

While the Christmas tree takes the front-and-center stage during this holiday season, supported by a cast of poinsettias, cyclamens, kalanchoes, Christmas cactuses, and amaryllises, hollies often find themselves relegated to wreaths, garlands, and candle adornments. Years ago, I learned from Fred Galle’s tome, “Hollies: The Genus Ilex” (Timber Press, OR 1997), that hollies were quintessential Christmas symbols extensively used for centuries in holiday wreaths and Christmas decorations. Galle wrote that in London in 1851, 250,000 bunches of English hollies (Ilex aquifolium) were sold and adorned houses, churches, street corners, and marketplaces. In some parts of England, residents retained the holly sprigs until the following year because they believed it would protect their homes from lightning strikes.

Cracking up: confessions of a winter-weary gardener and her wall

As a policy, I don’t like to complain about winter. I’m hardy but herbaceous, inclined to hide quietly and regroup each offseason—happy for the downtime and change of scenery, happy for moisture in any form to recharge the system around me. But this is silly:The back door hasn’t opened since December; the front one will, but not the storm door just beyond. Just a single portal to the forbidding outer world beyond is operable, and it requires cardboard shims (below) to stay shut, the latch and strike plate no

How To Kill Poison Ivy, According To A Horticulturist

Poison ivy(Toxicodendron radicans) is a vine that contains an oily resin known as urushiol. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when the oil comes in contact with the skin, it can result in contact dermatitis, often presenting as a red, itchy rash with blisters or bumps. While poison ivy can be identified (and thus avoided) using a few key indicators outlined in the next section, it’s particularly concerning in areas where children and pets play, as they likely will not know how to differentiate it from other innocuous plants.
