Rug shopping can be thrilling—between materials, patterns, and colors, you can fine-tune a rug’s design to the needs of your space. Take one look at the price tag, though, and you may question if you even need a rug.
Rugs are essential for grounding a space, dampening noise, and giving your feet a soft place to land. But about that price… Tanya Pallopson, founder of Ticking Stripe Design, has good news: when it comes to rugs, you no longer have to give up style (and a paycheck) in exchange for function. Affordable and machine-washable rugs are available in a range of designs and sizes, from doormats to living room area rugs. “In the past, we would have recommended a high-quality wool or sisal rug for high-traffic areas in the home,” Pallopson says, but that’s not the case anymore. With improvements to the materials that rugs are made of, customers have more options that are both pretty and practical. lots “Now, with the advanced synthetic materials used in rugs, we don’t have to choose between function and beauty,” Pallopson says.
Pallopson recommends saving your dollars when rug shopping and purchasing a washable polyester rug instead of a pricey option you have to be precious with. This is especially the case in high-traffic areas of your home that kids, pets, and clumsy family members often walk on. Think: an entryway where dirty boots get dropped and a kitchen subject to splattered spaghetti sauce. A covered porch, laundry room, or mudroom can benefit from a washable rug too. While a budget-friendly rug that can be washed at home is a good match for anyone, they’re especially useful to families with young kids, pet owners, and renters, who may want to cozy up a temporary space without spending too much money.

There are so many gardening techniques out there. Some are new techniques, some are old techniques, and some a blend of old and new. Electroculture gardening is an example of the latter. Electroculture gardening techniques have been studied since the late 1800’s to early 1900’s, but many of us have never heard of them. That’s because until recently electro gardening was deemed to have little to no benefit, often because those initially interested went chasing after another possible more profitable enterprise. New studies are proving that electroculture does influence plant growth as well as having other beneficial effects. Intrigued? Keep reading the following information on electroculture for beginners.
There’s no understating the importance of a kitchen backsplash. Not only is a backsplash practical—sparing your bare walls from spaghetti sauce splatters—but it sets the tone for your kitchen’s personality. Think of it as an opportunity to flex your design skills, whether that means including a jolt of color, choosing an unconventional material, or sticking to a classic-as-can-be style. There’s a caveat, though: if you veer too trendy or too conventional, a backsplash can quickly look outdated. To spare yourself from inevitable regret, we asked three interior designers for their honest take on backsplashes they’re sick of seeing. Warning: controversial opinions ahead. Read on to learn which popular backsplashes they think need to retire, so you can invest in a conversation piece (not a controversy) that you’ll love for years to come.

In May this year, I said goodbye to Lavender Shed. Since then, we haven’t made much progress in erecting its replacement, Ryan’s new workshop. Now that the weather is cooling down we will pick up that project again, but it means that it will almost certainly be next year before we can remove Seagrass Shed and erect my greenhouse/shed hybrid.
