Sparrowhawks are one of the most agile birds of prey in the UK. They evolved to nip, dive and
swerve around trees to hunt in forests, and this means they’re also well-adapted to hunt amongst
the buildings in our urban centres. I’ve seen them several times in my garden in urban Cambridge.
Either perched on my fence, streaking across in a blur, or, on one memorable occasion, swiping a
Starling from the bird feeder and plucking it on the ground.

While it’s always hard to watch any kind of predation it’s incredible to see a bird of prey hunt so
close – particularly since we cannot take their continued existence for granted. Sparrowhawks are
still recovering from a significant decline in the 20th century when they were very affected by
agricultural chemicals and human persecution, and while their numbers are now stable, pesticides
are still a threat as is lack of food (most adults die in March and April when food is scarce).

They can be found all throughout the UK and Ireland, except in the most mountainous areas. They
are easily confused with Kestrels, but Kestrels have longer and more pointed wings with rows of
black spots running down their bellies, as opposed to Sparrowhawks’ horizontal bars. The way they
fly can also give them away since Kestrels are known for their incredible ability to hover on the spot.
They can fly into the wind at the exact perfect speed – wings fluttering, eyes scanning as they search
for prey on the ground. Sparrowhawks will instead keep on the move with a ‘flap-flap-glide’ rhythm.
