If you have an unused room in your home that's mainly being used to store items or it's completely empty, it's time to repurpose it so it can transform into a place that serves your lifestyle and needs well.
We asked design experts to offer their best tips on how to create an intentional space, read on to learn how you can get started.
Not all spaces are created equally. Take note of the room’s pluses and minuses, from the size to the lighting to its accessibility. Does the room get hot at certain times of the day, or is it usually chilly? Are there any odd odors in the space? These are just a few questions to get you started on how to repurpose the room.
It can be tempting to start in the middle of the process and decorate, but it won’t do much good to have a beautiful space that you still won’t use. Take your time and really be honest with yourself about the room’s shortcomings. Then, you will be able to effectively mitigate any less-pleasant features of the space.
Think about your hobbies and interests. Maybe you enjoy doing yoga and don’t have a dedicated spot to stretch and meditate. Perhaps you work from home and are currently using the kitchen table as your desk. Make a list of what function the room could serve to make your life a little easier.
You don’t have to choose just one purpose, either. The room can be multifunctional with proper planning. And you also don’t have to have an entire room to spare in order to make the change.
“It’s okay to step outside of the box,” says Amy Brown, principal and chief designer of Unearthed Interiors.
Brown recommends using the specific space that suits your family's needs.
