Zinnias have a pretty long bloom period, which extends from late spring to the first frost. This prolonged flowering season gives gardeners the ability to have a continuous display of color, an enduring sense of beauty.
So if you just can’t get enough zinnias, you aren’t alone—and thanks to their long blooming period, you can ensure you have plenty. Just look to Chloe Grayling, or @lovechloejane on TikTok, who showed her followers how to get thousands of zinnias by starting with just one flower.
“Here’s how to turn one zinnia into 108,212 zinnias,” Grayling says in a video with more than 806,000 views, 118,000 likes, and 28,000 saves. “We’re going to start, as always, with one fresh flower. When it starts to look a bit sad, take it out of the water and let it dry. It’s properly dry when the petals sound crunchy like this.”
“Now, as zinnia seeds are hidden, and the way to find them is to gently pull out the petals,” Grayling says. “Every petal holds a seed. Every seed grows a new zinnia plant, and every zinnia plant can grow 10 or 20 or 30 beautiful new flowers. I like to remove the seeds from the petals because it saves space and because it stops any moisture damage from petals that aren’t quite dry.”
