Growing Coleus in water is a fun way to add a colorful plant to your indoor variegated collection! Discover the easy steps to do it right!
Snip 4-6 inches of cuttings from the parent coleus plant just below a leaf node.
Remove the leaves from the lower half of each cutting, leaving only the top sets of leaves.
Dip the cut end of the cutting in rooting hormone (You can also use honey). While this step is optional, it can enhance root development.
Fill the container with enough water to submerge the lower portion of the cuttings.
Insert it into the water, ensuring the leafless node is below the water level.
Place the container in a spot with bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun exposure, as it may encourage algae growth in the water.
Check the water level regularly – change it every 4-6 days to keep it fresh and oxygenated. If it looks cloudy – change it immediately.
After a few weeks, you should observe roots emerging from the submerged nodes. Once the roots are a few inches long, your coleus cuttings are ready for transplanting.
Once the roots are well-established, you can either continue to grow the plant in the water, ot transplant it into a pot filled with a well draining soil.
