After we refurbished our backyard swimming pool, I was trying to figure out how to hide the pool motors. We had added a Sun Shade Sail Canopy last year to protect the equipment from the Hot Galveston Island Sun.
We had added a Sun Shade Sail Canopy that releases from the fence so the guys can clean the filter.
I leaned all of the 1939 window screens against the walkway behind the backyard. I wanted to save them when… I could come up with an idea on how to use them.
I used a razor blade to remove the screens from the inside of the frames. I didn't dare try to take the frames apart.
I used slats saved from an old door. I placed them where I would have enough for both frames. I used E6000 glue with a toothpick to glue the slats to the frame. Mr. also added stability with a brad gun.
I sanded and painted the finished frame with the same yellow as on the fence.
Mr. found some old hinges in the garage and joined the two frames together. He attached the frames to the side of the post that hold up the Sun Shade Sail Canopy. I dug out the grass underneath and added old bricks to help keep it level and stable. I also added a flower pot in front and back of the frames for stability and to help hide the equipment. I'll hang some plants from the top too. The little sign attached to the frame says 'No Diving'

You need at least one roof ventilator and one side ventilator to get good air changes. The roof ventilator is the most important for allowing hot air to escape. Windows at both sides of the greenhouse can be beneficial. Louvered windows are very useful as they are easy to operate and I find hinged windows less stable in wind. Automatic ventilators are available that open the window using a plunger system. Obviously the door is a great ventilator and should be left open when temperatures reach 80 degrees or humidity is 100%. I have never needed an extractor fan but for a large greenhouse a slow moving fan can help some crops.
Operating a chainsaw is inherently dangerous. The chain moves at 55-60 miles per hour, or about 88 feet per second. The teeth on the chain are designed not to cut but to remove material. Accidental contact with chainsaws often results in serious injuries to operators.
Painting is a lot of work. Once you finish, you must clean up. How do you wash your paintbrushes?
I love the look of giant leaves of aroids like Colocasia (shown) and Alocasia looming over the surface of my various water gardens, but always found the “planting” of them difficult: Everybody always wanted to set themselves free and float to the surface, even if I set rocks inside their rims. Naughty babies. So here’s what I do:First, I hold the plant, black plastic nursery pot and all, under water until it stops bubbling and is fully soaked. Then I simply stuff it, black nursery pot and all, into the heaviest terra cot
I DON’T EVEN KNOW how to explain this one, except to point out they are all male frogs, and it didn’t end well. This poolside pile-up continued until the one on the upper deck managed to capsize the lot, and a fight ensued that lasted most of the day.
I PROMISE THAT IT WON’T BE QUITE THIS BAD if you show up for the local August 20, 2011 hidden garden tour that includes my place. That naughty Andre Jordan is always exaggerating.
As practical as a hose reel is, frankly it's just not that nice to look at. When I was making these planters for the side of our garage, I realized that because of their size, they would be a perfect place to hide the hose!
We are pretty excited to bring you our latest build. In our backyard, we have an old ugly AC unit. It’s an eye sore like most people’s outside AC units!
My removable ‘outdoor air conditioner screen fence thingy’ will hide those air conditioners, allow proper air flow for the condenser, and make the AC guy happy when he sees how easy it is to remove. I made these easy and lightweight lattice screens to hang on the posts. You can easily have this project done in a weekend. So let’s get started. Here’s how to hide an air conditioner unit outside…the easy way.
We are moving right along in the back yard working on our spa area, just finished the pony wall but needed something to hang our beach towels and personal item to put on. We have chairs but many times they are wet from afternoon showers. So I went to my garage and started looking around for some supplies. I had a small wooden spool that holds wire and a short leftover 4 x4 so i came up with and idea.
Hi all! I made a stool from leftover wood and fabric I had. I am not sharing how I built the stool because it is no big deal: 4 legs, a seat and some cross bars. What I want to show you, is how it went from very ordinary to pretty nice and luxurious, well… for a deck!
