Today marks the 20th birthday of ESA’s Mars Express mission, which launched on its way to the red planet on 2 June 2003.
Since it began science operations in 2004, Mars Express has provided us with breathtaking views of Mars in 3D and the most complete map of the chemical composition of the atmosphere. It has also studied the innermost moon – Phobos – in unprecedented detail, and traced the history of water across the planet, showing that the environmental conditions on Mars may once have been suitable for life.
To celebrate this remarkable anniversary, ESA is holding a special event – the first-ever livestream from Mars! Tune in to ESA’s YouTube channel from 16:46 BST (17:45 CEST) to see new pictures roughly every 50 seconds as they’re beamed down directly from the long-lived but still highly-productive Martian orbiter.
“This is an old camera, originally planned for engineering purposes, at a distance of almost three million kilometres from Earth – this hasn’t been tried before and to be honest, we’re not 100% certain it’ll work. But I’m pretty optimistic. Normally, we see images from Mars and know that they were taken days before. I’m excited to see Mars as it is now – as close to a martian ‘now’ as we can possibly get!”
