The rare Chaenomeles speciosa ‘Contorta’ – an ornamental quince – has been crowned the winner of Plant Heritage’s Threatened Plant of the Year 2023 competition.
To Plant Heritage’s knowledge, the winning plant is thought to be only one of five of its kind still known to exist in the UK, and is also only one of two surviving Chaenomeles cultivars in the UK to have twisting branches and larger, more open flowers. It was announced as victorious at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival and belongs to National Collection Holder David Ford, who has cared for it since 2020.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
1 July – 22 August 2023, Lewes
The Glyndebourne festival is a theatrical summer highlight. A revival of Peter Hall’s 1981 lavish production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream will grace the opera stage. The musical production explores four lovers who find themselves lost in a magical wood on an intoxicating summer night, and Glyndebourne’s gardens that can be explored by theatregoers before the curtain rises are a similarly stunning spectacle. A charming rose garden, dye garden where natural dyes are created for use by the costume department, lakes, and croquet green are a splendid pre-theatre sight to be enjoyed with one of Glyndebourne’s famous picnics.
