Not long after stating publicly on this blog that I didn’t expect to find room for more roses, it occurred to me, in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way, that extending the small bed behind the shed following removal of the tree stump might in fact just do this after all! The original bed housed rambling rose ‘Rosemarie Viaud’, which rambles over the shed roof, and repeat flowering old rose ‘Rose de Rescht’, but if the latter were replanted elsewhere there would be space for a trio of modern shrub roses, planted to together to give the suggestion of a large bush, as has recently been done in the rose garden.
That really would be the easiest option, especially as I know which rose I would order if I did have space for another, but I rather like the idea of some frothiness in this bed, some billowing perennials perhaps. Knowing how hard it was to decide on plants to pad out the Obelisk Border and Coop Corner, this is unlikely to prove an easy task, despite the small size of the bed – but maybe annuals could fulfill the same brief, particularly in the short term. However, after bricklaying was done during the week, at least the extended bed is ready for whatever does get planted in it. There is still some paving to be done behind it, and this will utilise some of the slabs lifted from the rose garden, which is a Good Thing.
Looking above this area (below), you will see the variegated holly which has been a visual focal point in the garden ever since we moved in, but with 28 further years of growth it is now very much taller and wider than it used to be, and we have reluctantly decided that its time is up. It encroaches on the shed, two neighbours’ gardens as well as our own and, despite being deciduous, does still lose some leaves

Planting annuals during the fall is a sure-shot way to prepare your garden for the coming year. These rugged, resilient plants overwinter through the cold and burst into blooms in spring’s warmth. Here are hardy annuals to plant in the fall for flowers next year!
Butterfly bushes are hugely popular in the South for many reasons. They’re easy to grow and bloom all summer long in shades of pink, purple, white, and magenta. Of course, they also provide nectar-rich food for butterflies, which visit these pretty shrubs all season long. Since they bloom in the summer, some may think you should prune them in the fall, but the best time to prune butterfly bushes is actually in late winter to early spring.

We all dream of a bright, airy sanctuary flooded with plenty of natural light—but some rooms in a home will always be darker than others, whether that's due to their position, shape, or the number of windows.
A very wet Tuesday proved to be the only weather thorn in the side this week, the rest of which has brought some brighter weather, mild enough for comfortable gardening after cool beginnings. I have no longer been able to resist the urge to cull and tidy up, and the tomatoes in the greenhouse were amongst the first to go (above), followed by some of the sadder occupants of the cutting beds (below). To the right of the space previously occupied by the tomatoes are some of the less hardy plants, potted up and brought inside ‘just in case’ (salvia and agastache in particular, with penstemon to follow soon).
When properly lighting a room, it's all about mixing and matching various lighting types. A combination of overhead, task, and accent lighting is key in any room of the home, interior designers say. They also stress the importance of properly lighting each room of the home based on how it is used and discuss the significance of color temperature.
